Just upgraded my mac pro 1,1 from a non apple 8800gt to another non apple card, a PowerColor Radeon Hd 5770. The card makes a buzzing noise which I have surmised is the cards vibration on the ram cage. I took the power cable and stuck it underneath and the vibrations are practically non existent. The cage doesn't feel too hot at all but I was wondering if this is going to make the wire fail? or is there another solution one of you could let me know.

I actually just this morning moved the graphics card up one slot. Far less noise then before and while it isn't the optimal slot I don't do any gaming or anything taxing with the card.

I guess it will be worse than just block the slot 2.

Looks like this cooler has a backplate that make it doesn't fit into slot 1. That means you have to put it in slot 2. And since it's size, it may block both slot 3&4, eventually only leave slot 1 for another PCIe card.

It's still only double height and the back plate likely wouldn't be necessary in a MP.

Just want to know is it possible to install the cooler without the backplate? It seems this backplate is a part of the new design to replace the traditional way to install with thermal glue.

Also, is the graphic card holder optional as well? It looks like that thing will occupy 5 slots.

It's a huge son of a gun and the most non-German thing I've ever installed. The installation guide is clear as mud and doesn't list the card as being supported so it's a play it by ear sorta thing. If I were thinking of putting it in the MP I'd measure the heck out of everything before, it's WIDE. The plus side is my PWM fans are now stopped which they never were so it is displacing heat better than the MSI cooler did. I'll dink around with it tonight then heat it up tomorrow, I'll probably have to change to positive case pressure, but I'll know tomorrow.
