Most people don't know it exists - they just use the Dock to swap between applications or click on a visible window.
Most people don't know alt+tab exists on Windows, either.

It looked vaguely familiar to me. That's why I went to the noobie book to see if that's where I had seen it before. I'm going to try to get into the habit of using it to see how I like it.
Just Hide It
I should first agree with just about everyone that command+Q is easy. I'm not super lazy, but I do like efficiency, so I have a solution for you. An app called Dockless will make Preview and Word (or Pages) never appear in the dock.
Pros: Leaves free precious dock space.
Doesn't pester me with its activity.
Cons: Takes the tiniest bit of processing while its there.
Worth a shot. It won't call you lazy at least. (Kidding! Kidding!)
