Reading a thread several pages long I couldn't help but reply to messages using the quotation feature, after a few replies I noticed that all of my posts were collated into one, which cut down on the litter that would usually befall a thread, which made a lot of sense.

Is this a new feature, I haven't ever seen this behaviour before in a forum. Does it only apply to quoted replies and what happens if somebody posts between replies: will it break the continuity?

Yes, that is part of the forum software consecutive posts are merged into a single post. It has nothing to do with quoting, but rather posting withing a specific time frame - an hour I believe.
