On the unlikely chance that I'm not missing something, I don't think calling somebody Pocahontas is intrinsically racist.

They're mocking Warren for claiming to be Native American by comparing her to somebody who definitely is. It'd be like calling a stupid person "Einstein" sarcastically; it's not an insult to Einstein or smart people in general—it only works because the stupid person fails to match him in comparison.

To clarify, I have no problem with Senator Warren, and I think the comments are stupid and childish. Not racist.
Good post, and very good example.

As others have pointed out, I think people are so quick to label statements as racism. I personally think that the Pocahontas comments are just dumb, but not racist.

I’d have to argue that it isn’t about being quick to label something. If something looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, there’s an understanding why it’s called a duck.

If it’s dumb, ask why Pocahontas is used for the ‘joke’ or label? Why doesn’t 45 call call Warren ‘Rachel Dolezal’? It’s more recent, fitting, & topical. Any claim that 45 only knows Pocahontas I’m doubting, I’m sure someone even told him about her. Using Pocahontas is a conscious decision on 45s part, based on race.

Can we add "Homophobia is ok now?" to this? Look at the front page, are the mods asleep? Or do they not care how this is reflecting on their brand?

If you see a homophobic post, report it.

The mods may well - quite literally - be asleep. They are spread over the globe, have jobs, lives, children etc - they donate (quite a bit of) their spare time to moderation.

I wouldn't want to be a moderator.

I did find it odd that a computer comment site would have a 'political' area. It probably provides for more eyes, which is fine.

I just set it to 'ignore'. There is no 'winning' an argument there. Best to just stay away...

A few years ago, there was someone that I deeply respected. They always seemed so calm, and centered. They were always helpful to others and never did I see any condescension, or judging by them. UNTIL... I saw them out of town, and at a bar, and was horrified at the things they were saying. They used racist terms to describe the president, and slammed most of the people/customers/clients we dealt with on a daily basis. Apparently they thought they were 'safe' there, and that somehow I too was a closet whatever they were. My respect crumbled... It's amazing to see someone's true character. I was so disappointed in them, and horrified that they thought 'coming out' to me was 'safe'. You think you know somebody...
