If the external monitor can run 120hz and what you are doing on the MBP is easy enough for it to manage, it should run 120hz. If not, then that is a bug which should get fixed.

Q Qwaf macrumors regular Sep 11, 2010 128 54 Dec 14, 2016 #3 I run: 1x 1440p, 144hz (at 120Hz, macOS glitches out above that) G-Sync monitor 1x 1440p, 60Hz monitor On a Radeon Pro 455 equipped MBP, so that 460 should be fine.
