A user at eGPU.io forum posted an update on his eGPU with WX 5100. The good news is it works. The bad news is it's barely faster than an RX 460.

    They won't be.

    iMacs don't have cards. ;)

Well, basically the WX 5100 is a Baffin-based workstation card (RX 460 is also Baffin), with a TDP of about 75W and a single slot wide (which is a plus). Whether this card actually has any other advantages over the vanilla RX 460 (other than the huge 8 GB VRAM and being single-slot) is unclear. The price is a clear downside though (roughly 3 times the price of a 460).

I'm assuming the WX's drivers come in the same package as the 460's drivers. That would also indicate that the WX4100/7100 might also work.

The WX5100 has 28 CU (RX460 has 14 only), Up to 3.9 TFLOPS (RX460 is 2.2 TFLOPS). So, I will say this card should havs advantage over the RX460.

The test was done via eGPU setup, and didn't unlock all 28 CU (I read that post, it mentioned about unlock the CUs, but seems the test was done before that. Still shows 14 in the screen capture) . So, hard to tell if this already fully release the card's performance under macOS.

Price of course still a big downside with this performance. But 4x 8GB VRAM single slot cards with internal power only (up to ~16 TFLOPS in total) is now possible on the cMP. Which is surely a good sign. An expensive upgrade still better than no way to upgrade, right?

This card also has half native support which is also an advantage over most of other new GPUs (assume still required to perform kext mod to unlock the CU).

The funny thing is this 4x WX 5100 GPU upgrade on a Mac Pro tower is more cost effective than a dual D700 Mac Pro trashcan. :D
