Apple has officially stated that it affects only a small number of machines
What they consider a small number and what we consider a small number are two different things.

I think the anecdotal evidence of them extending a repair program and making a public acknowledgement is telling insofar as that its not so small that they can ignore the problem.

To take another way, has apple acknowledged the issues with the 2011 MBPs yet? Those numbers are not small it seems and yet they're not doing anything for them, so by inference their attention to the 2010 issue seems larger then the 2011 GPU issue.

Radeongate could be widespread and be much more costly to replace than a small number of machines with bad 330m from a batch. Apple is probably still investigating on what to do with this problem.

Only Apple knows how many bad 330m are out there and we don't. So it's very speculative to suggest otherwise when Apple says it only affects a small number of machines. My 4 year old 2010 15" 330m MBP is still 100% perfect without any of the symptoms so I believe Apple when they say it.

I don't only because I have had first hand experience with them and their small numbers. I had a Powerbook that had a problem (that supposedly only affected a small number but didn't) People kept complaining and while Apple was not as popular then as now, news and tech sites were picking the story up and so Apple finally extended repair program.

My point is Apple dragged their feet and minimized the issue until they had to confront the problem head on because of bad press. Same exact thing occurred with the iPhone 4 and its antenna. The old, "you're holding it wrong" excuse, where they danced around the issue until they could no longer.

I love Apple products but they are not the most forthright company and I take what they say about problems with a grain of salt.
