The question I have is very specific. I am looking for some guidance as to how I would be best to run my MacPro. I have previously run it with 4 x 500 GB Hitachi hard drives on a software RAID 0 configuration. One major disappointment though - NO BOOT CAMP. To begin with I needed the speed of all four drives on RAID 0 for high-def video editing, but instead am now using a xServe RAID. I am currently thinking about replacing one of my 500's with a 1 TB and using that for Boot Camp. As for the other three drives I am trying to decide between using a RAID 0 or an Apple RAID card and a RAID 5. I would like to know the tested speed differences between a 3 drive software RAID 0, a 3 drive hardware RAID 0 using the Apple RAID card, and a 3 drive hardware RAID 5 using an Apple RAID card. Any information would be helpful!

8-core 3 Ghz MacPro (5400 series), 4Gb Fibre Card

Then forget the Apple RAID card because all four internal drives are connected to it, not just three as you would need.
In addition, RAID-5 cannot match (by far) RAID-0 raw performance. If speed is your primary target, then stick to software RAID-0.

You are absolutely right. I wish I had known this before I custom built mine. The two extra SATA are also invisible to Windows as well. On the bright side, RAID 5 speed is very snappy!
