tomorrow i try to cancel my order and see f i can return the 8 gb that did not come out the box since i'm on holidays.:D
And i will order the 24 gb from transit if you recomend it. I already ordered
2X120 Ocz vertex series 2. can't wait to get all together.
Thanks :)

What apps will you be using that might need 24 GB of RAM?

JMO, but the 8GB modules are not a good value yet .......... only go that route if you're convinced you need big RAM.

4x4GB might be a good compromise in terms of $'s and capability.

FWIW, I'm using a 120 Vertex 2 (3.5" flavor) as the boot drive in my MP and it works great!

cheers and congrats on the new MP

You have a point.
Photoshop & capture ONE basicly, files that add up to 1 gb with layers on ps.
Yes the 4x4 I paid 250 € very good deal :D and the cost of 24gb with transit is 750$ shipped from us. Do you think 16 gb will be enough. Considering I have a 120 gb vertex entirely as scratch disc + 120 gb as a boot drive.
Thanks
:DLeg

I would not say get 24 but saying TEST what you are doing now and see what PS is using and your system is using ;)

this is important you might be OK with 12 ? or 16 or might need 24 ?

nobody can say something is to little or to much but give general even I am doing that but I am saying TEST and check what you use now that is the only way you know for sure

:)

What he says.

When you open an image in PS, go to the lower left corner of the image window and set the little menu to efficiency; if the value stays at 100% while you are working on the file, you are fine, more or less - it's a crude test .

On my MP with 12GB of RAM, and a 1.5-2GB layered file, I will only sometimes hit scratch, 16GB should be fine for me I assume.

There's no such thing as too much RAM, but no need to waste money, either.

Have you updated PS to CS5, by the way ?

Nice tip, thanks! . Im far away from my macpro on holiday. i' m trying to set up an optimize workstation for my comeback and start well the new year. I will just wait until I get back and go from there, I can only do so much from a distance.
But I assume that if you work with such huge files and have 12 gb, I will be fine with 16gb and if I hit the hard drive, well , I'll see how the ssd will respond . And if I really need more memory I'll wait until the 8 gb cards go down, but for now I'll save my $$$ .
I just got the mp 2.8 quad; before that, I had to say good by to my 2.8 dual p. (2006) with 7gb ram, cause I was getting kernel panic attacks all time. I must have reinstalled the system and go to apple genius 10 times . But besides that the speed when it was working, was not bad.
