Rain-X repels large amounts of water and forms beads. It would have no effect on small finger print. I promise. I detail cars and use Rain-X all the time.

Ok, I was not disputing whether or not rain x would work. I was disputing the fact that you stated it would not work because it repels water not oil, and that our fingerprints are made of oil. That's was my rebutle.

Sorry for the confusion. I have rain-x on my windshield and still get fingerprints when I thought it though. Just tried it after your post. :p

I disagree. I posted above that I had used rain-x on my iPad & iPhone and didn't recall it making much if any difference. This thread, the fact that I ran across my bottle of rain-x and a severe case of insomnia was enough for me to give it another try on both my iPhone 4 and my iPad. (Full disclosure: I have a cheap eBay screen protector on both devices. Results may be different applying it directly to the screen.) The results are pretty obvious to me: the screens are slicker, have less of a tendency to pick up fingerprints and fingerprints are far easier to wipe off - usually not requiring anything more than a dry microfiber cloth.

Both my wife and I used the iPad and iPhone for a few hours since I applied the Rain-x - playing games, typing emails, etc. and had our fingers all over the screen. The screen was noticeably slicker. After this much use (particularly the games that involved touching the screen everywhere) the screen would be all but covered with fingerprints and to get it completely clean would require at least a small amount of liquid but that was not the case. There were only a few fingerprints and they wiped off very easily. Right now, I just tried dragging my fingers across the screen and after a few attempts, I did leave a print - but nowhere near as bad as without the Rain-X. The difference is obvious and significant.

It's been a while since I last tried the Rain-x (about a month after iPad launch) and didn't recall it working that well but now I do remember what the issue was: it worked but it didn't last. After just a few days, it needed to be re-applied. I suspect that the same will be true this time around. I don't have rain-x on my windshield but did put some on a small mirror for comparison purposes. The mirror easily picks up fingerprints - perhaps even worse than before. Maybe the screen protector is the difference? I can't say - but am confident in my results. Would be curious what results others get - particularly without a screen protector.

Use iKlear. It is a polish so it will leave the screen feeling slicker. I use iklear on my laptop screen and lcd monitors.

Doesn't rain-x have a strong odor to it? I have not used it in awhile but I remember it smelled really bad.

ive tried a few of my top range car products on my iphone screen, zymol destiny (£500 wax) and chemical guys Jetseal

To me it has a noticeable but not strong smell while applying and no odor whatsoever once applied. But everyone's sniffer and and sensitivity is different.

I'd call the notion a horrible idea. Rain-X has been known to "craze" (i.e., permanently cloud or haze) many types of plastics. I would not want to risk it on the oleophobic coating on my iPhone.

Just having the phone in my pocket w/o a screen protector keeps it nice and clean--my pocket lining wipes it clean. If it gets too smudged while I'm using it, I wipe it on my (soft cloth) shirt or on my (cotton denim, well worn and soft) pant leg and I'm good to go.

Wonder if it'd reduce friction on the screen and/or make fingerprints easier to wipe off. Anybody tried it? Search revealed only one post with no specifics.

It works great. Most people don't realize the oleophobic coating on their phones doesn't last that long... just physics of daily friction on a surface. Rain-X is does basically the same thing by sealing the glass so fingerprints don't sticks, and it makes it really easy to clean.

I imagine he either worked it out or has moved on since this was posted 7 years ago.

Here's hoping.
