1. I just installed a glass screen protector on my iPhone X

2. There's a rainbow effect on the edge which is pretty annoying. Especially on 1 side.

3. Is this normal?

Yes it’s the light refraction through the glass screen protector. Proper placement can reduce it down to almost nothing but is very tricky to do. The newer Zagg shields are slightly bigger to eliminate this effect.

So I’m guessing most people have this issue?

All of the X’s in my family (4) had them to some extent last year. We all switched to the max this year and don’t have that problem as the shield is slightly larger so extends just past the edge of the OLED.

I have 2 Zagg glass screen protectors purchased for my previous iPhone 8 Plus, although I'd never bothered with screen protectors before. I applied one of them and immediately discovered the effect that you speak of. I tried to live with it for a few days but in the end it was just too distracting. Additionally, it even made the screen look smaller, not exactly what you're going for when you buy a plus-sized device. I ate the cost of the second one and it was an expensive meal. Never again.

The zagg glass luxe screen protectors will not have this issue because there is a black border on the edges. I got one because the rainbow was bothering me.

I feel better knowing I'm not the only one.

I'm going to try to get used to it.

I don't like it (rainbow effect), but this screen protector I got has great anti-smudging (at least so far).

So I want to keep it on for now.

Belkin Invisiglass Screen Protector does not have that problem. Apple store will apply it for free with their machine.

I saw that one. My concern is the anti smudge anti oil capabilities?

I got a protector with great anti smudge (so far!)

I'll try to live with the rainbow bc I prioritize anti smudge more.

I had gotten a supposed anti smudge protector but wasn't too good so I got this new one
