As my title says, Raise to Wake on the watch has still not been perfected after 3 generations.. I find myself at times having to redo the raise motion to get the screen to come up and this happened on the series 2 as well as on my current series 3 Stainless steel model, quite frustrating. Can’t Apple get the Raise to Wake function properly working ALL TIME Time?

I honestly can say that I don’t think I have ever once had a problem in almost 3 years.

I had a major problem.
For nearly two days it would wake up.
I must have tried a 100 times over the 2 days.
I would try to surprise the watch, quickly turn my wrist to see if it would wake up.

Then I decided to turn off theater. Yeah I forgot I set it.

My mother did exactly the same thing!!!

I've never had a problem.

Just to clarify, I never said this is a PROBLEM, I said that the wake to raise function does not work smoothly 100% of the time and after 3 generations it should have been improved but it seems to be the same ever since the first Apple Watch

It's far too sensitive for me. I work at a desk so it goes on ALL THE TIME and I'd say out of all the times I've raised my wrist to read the time it has worked except for 1-2 times (1.5 months of ownership). I usually leave RTW off because I type all day and I can save a bit of battery if I do.

Yeah, I had the same issue as Big McGuire. When I first got my watch I noticed the screen was turning on all the time while sitting at my desk working. I've since turned off raise to wake and now my watch battery lasts 3-4 days sometimes.

I do find it kind of annoying that I have to tap the screen or buttons to wake it up to see a notification. I wish there was a setting that left raise to wake off, but lit up the screen whenever you got a notification. With raise to wake off it does light up when you get a phone call, but not notifications. Same thing with GPS directions, it vibrates to tell you that you need to make a turn, but doesn't light up the screen so you don't know which direction to turn unless you have your phone visible, or tap your watch to get the screen to turn on.

Me either. Series 0 to series 3. Works great. I tried turning RTW off but, it was annoying taping the screen or turning the Digital Crown to view the screen.

The reality is it is a delicate balance between over sensitive and under sensitive. And different people have different opinions on where that line should be. Then of course there's the issue of trying to account for body positions, particularly laying down or when your arms are already elevated.

Like most people on here I don't really have an issue with the balance that Apple has chosen. Sometimes it won't come on when I want it too, and sometimes it does come on when I didn't mean it to. But it's extremely rare for me now that it won't come on. That being said, sometimes I do need to tap the screen to wake, but I usually do that without even attempting to "raise to wake" because I know the positions it won't work in.

I experience the same issue. Series 3, Nike LTE owner. When i'm doing any Nike Training Club workout that has me in a prone position and arms out in front of me on the ground - turning my wrist toward me never turns it on. Even if I turn my wrist away, then turn it back - still doesn't turn on.

That said, any other scenario - walking (raising wrist), running, supine on the ground, seated - it works flawlessly.
I think there is a minimal rotational and elevation sensor - and when the action doesn't meet that minimum movement - it doesn't turn on.

I would recommend getting a replacement if ur experiencing this issue outside of very narrow constrained environments (ie: regardless of the scenario the screen doesn't turn on).

But subliminally, your thread title makes it seem like it's a problem based off it says "Raise to wake up still not been perfected after three generations...Cmon Apple."

One naturally would perceive that you view this as a problem, at least based off your own wording.

I don’t think Apple has done any improving to the Raise to Wake sensor ever since the first Apple Watch came out leading up the the current Series 3 Apple Watch and I say that because as I said above I’ve been experiencing this odd behavior for 3 generations now, it just doesn’t work as smooth as it should. It turns on when it’s not supposed to way too often and at odd times it fails to turn on when actually needed.

If I was to contact Apple they would probably call this is another classic case of “You’re not raising to Wake correctly with your arm during these odd times it doesn’t work” just like they did back in the old days when people were not holding their iPhones “correctly” and losing service

I didn’t know this was a thing people complained about, it works perfectly for me!

Since the last iOS update two days ago it's been very glitchy for me. I'm not sure what's going on and don't know if all iPhone update sometimes passes updates to the watch silently?

Mine has always had his intermittent problem. Don't know why but sometimes it doesn't come on, so I have to tap the screen or lower then re-raise my wrist :(

Yes that’s exactly what I do and it’s annoying. I find myself having to tap the screen rather than redoing the Raise the Wake gesture with my wrist as simply tapping the screen is somewhat quicker and less annoying during these types the screen fails to come up on a raise

Same with mine. I see it turning on and off all day long. Just driving sometimes. It may not work 100% of the time but mine will almost always work when I need it to do so.

If it doesn’t work tap the screen wakes it too.

I haven’t had many problems with it though.
