Utter nonsense. That's like saying that all crack pipes should come with free crack.

Apple makes the pipe. AT&T sells the crack.

I use this analogy because if you really believe what you said above, you are clearly quite familiar with crack.

AT&T provides the bandwidth and support for data. How they slice and dice the charges is their prerogative. Whether you're willing to pay for it is yours.

I just have to say that you provided a very god analogy. So good, that I actually spent the time to log in and quote you on this. Thank You for making my night.

On Topic:
I think tethering should be a very small fee, maybe an additional $5-$10. I think $45/month (Tethering + 2gb limit) is way too much in addition to the normal bill.

Actually, by setting a low cost of tethering, maybe many people who use less than 200 mb will in fact start to go over that limit and take the jump to the next cap, which in turn, means more money for AT&T. :)

On the flip side, if the real reason is because of their network overload, then this seems like a shady way of punishing their customers instead of just making their equipment 'better.'

Makes perfect sense. You use more bandwidth you pay for it. Tethering uses more bandwidth. A lot more on average. Therefor you pay a lot more. Not that complicated. :)

I'm with you on this one. Charging any amount of money for tethering on capped data plans makes absolutely zero sense. Same goes for other carriers that do the same stupid thing.

To AT&T et al.: if a customer goes over 2GB via tethering, charge him extra!!!!! Do you get it?? Charge him extra!!!!!! Bytes on iPhone and bytes on PC are no different!!!! They are still the same freakin' bytes!!!!!!!! What's your f******g problem??????!!!!!!!! Die, AT(f***g)T, die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, I feel your pain. I'm very angry at all of this myself.

dude, i so wanna call you names but won't.

you make zero sense.

He makes perfect sense. First you have to understand that AT&T has priced their plans based on their knowledge of how much data people actually will use, not on how much they are technically allowed. This way they can keep their prices competitive and still be sure of their profit. This is how it has always worked...those of us with low data usage have subsidized the bandwidth hogs.

Now comes tethering, which will significantly increase the portion of their 2 GB maximum tetherers will use. AT&T has two choices: they can offer tethering as an included feature and increase the price of everyone's data plan based on the new, higher average usage figure (thereby essentially forcing non-tetherers to subsidize the cost of tethering) -- or they can charge an additional fee to those who wish to tether.

Personally, I fail to see why forcing me to pay extra for my data plan to cover your tethering is preferable to charging you extra for the feature.

Wait a second there!! According to you and AT&T, using data on iPhone is different from using data on PC, hence, the $20 charge. Does it make sense to you??? We already pay $25 for 2GB. Why should AT&T care HOW we use it????? If I want more than 2GB, I pay more. If I want more and more, I pay more and more. And so on. What is that $20 charge for exactly? Huh?

Yes but Android 2.2 brings free tethering either way...

LOLOLOLOLOL keep dreaming. Can people PLEASE PLEASE do their research. iPhone can do tethering too, there is a reason it's blocked for AT&T Now. Lol, you really think sprint will allow free tethering because 2.2 has it.

FAIL

I am quite confused here. PBF is not suggesting that a tethered user surpass the 2GB limit. Rather he is saying that the 2GB was bought and paid for and it should not matter how it is used. If a user exceeds this limit, then they should have to pay for it.

Exactly. And i must add that being an american myself i feel that most people are cheap and feel entitled and want a free lunch. AT&T is not a Not for profit company. They care about their bottom line and pretty much all wireless companies do.

People rave about sprint and verizon well guess what? They don't care about people either all they want is your money.

If someone wants tethering on AT&T and any other provider you are going to have to pay for it. So throw a tantrum in the corner , Pray, Pull your hair out but it is what it is. So make it work

If the content and tone of your complaint letter resembles your post I am sure all the carriers will change their minds.

Wow, people obviously don't understand bandwidth. Whether you are browsing on your phone or browsing on a laptop tethered to your phone, the bandwidth stays the same. The argument is more data is consumed when you're tethered, which may or may not be the case. But the bandwidth is constant and does not change.

Just like at home, whether you are on your desktop on a wired connection to your modem/router, or you're connected by Wifi to your router on a laptop, your internet bandwidth is not changing. Your ISP does not care what device(s) is connected to your network, they are (typically) providing a constant amount of bandwidth to your home (2Mbs, 5Mbs, 10Mbs, 20Mbs, whatever....) through whatever medium is provided (DSL, cable, fiber, etc.)

No it doesn't. That's a feature that google mentioned would be supported but the tethering option is carrier dependent which means it will not be free.

Do you really how many carriers google would piss off if they just circumvented them and released a app that could do that.

The iPhone os was also capable of tethering as well but that's carrier dependent also.

I can see you're going to get very far in life with your savvy problem solving skills.

This actually doesn't make sense. Tethering will not use any more bandwith than before because you are paying for a capped plan not unlimited data. Not that complicated.

Anyways, supposedly this guy likes emails. Here:

I dont like the cap on tethering data plans either, but look on the bright side. You all most likely have iPhones, so you can keep the unlimited plan and then when 4.0 comes out, JB and get free tethering all you want :D. I'm sorry, I'm trying to help the very angry poster above me calm down.

I hope if people send harrassing e-mails that they get their accounts cancelled. And before anyone says anything Verizon reserves the right to cancel accounts too if customers are harrassing or cussing.

AT&T needs to do the same thing because some people who e-mail them will probarly get nasty

So everyone who expresses dissatisfaction should get their accounts cancelled? Really? Anyone who offers a service will undoubtedly get a lot of complaints. No matter how good you are or how hard you try, some people will never be satisfied. It's a fact of life.

And if anyone offering a service views consumer feedback as "harrassment" should remove themselves from their line of work.

No but what im saying is if the E-Mails become harrassing. Some of these people get very irrational about this issue. And there is no reason to use 4 Letter words or issue death threats of people over a stupid Data plan.

If the complaint is professional that's one thing but if its F**K and things like that. Then they should cancel it. Verizon does and if you dont Think So look at this.

What Are Verizon Wireless' Rights to Limit or End Service or End this Agreement?
We can, without notice, limit, suspend or end your Service or any agreement with you for any good cause, including, but not limited to: (1) if you: (a) breach this agreement; (b) resell your Service; (c) use your Service for any illegal purpose, including use that violates trade and economic sanctions and prohibitions promulgated by any U.S. governmental agency; (d) install, deploy or use any regeneration equipment or similar mechanism (for example, a repeater) to originate, amplify, enhance, retransmit or regenerate an RF signal without our permission; (e) steal from or lie to us; or, if you're a Postpay customer, (f) pay late more than once in any 12 months; (g) incur charges larger than a required deposit or billing limit, or materially in excess of your monthly access charges (even if we haven't yet billed the charges); (h) provide credit information we can't verify; or (i) are unable to pay us or go bankrupt; or (2) if you, any user of your device or any account manager on your account: (a) threaten, harass, or use vulgar and/or inappropriate language toward our representatives; (b) interfere with our operations; (c) "spam," or engage in other abusive messaging or calling; (d) modify your device from its manufacturer's specifications; or (e) use your Service in a way that negatively affects our network or other customers. FAIL

Maybe you should read my other posts in this very thead before you make an arse of yourself as you just did. AT&T blocks it becuase they chose to. Did AT&T remove tethering from the other phones out there? No. Did AT&T turn off their data connect cards? No.

So why does the iPhone use so much more data when tethered, in fact it doesn't. If I access CNN on my iPhone and then turn around and access the same site tethered, the same amount of data transfers through my connection.

So let's see the EVO and the Pre+ both have wifi hotspot on by default. Can the carrier make changes sure - no arguments there.

So Fail - hardly.
