Now that After Effects 8.0.2 is out, providing true Leopard support, and has the potential to max out all 8 processors, the need for a heretofore ridiculous amount of RAM - at least 16GB to fully utilize AE's Multiprocessing feature on an 8-core machine - has arrived!

I'm looking at RAM prices for my just-shipped 8-core, 3.0, 8800GT Mac Pro, and I'm finding some truly insane prices out there. OWC has 16GB (8x2GB) for $649. Wowsers !!!

When you compare these prices with Crucial or, heaven forbid, apple.com, you realize there is a massive price range out there.

My question is, has anyone completed or seen a RAM benchmark test using brand name vs. generic RAM that has all the same specs? What exactly are we paying for when we buy brand-name RAM?

Answers and/or clues much appreciated! I will follow with whatever I can find. I know there's many others out there wondering the same thing.
