I would like to get 4 more gigs of ram for my 2008 mac pro. I don't want to spend the money on apple ram so I have a few questions about 3rd party ram.

1) is third party ram safe to use?
2) are there any downsides to third party ram?
3) wheres the best place to get third party ram?
4) whats the best third party ram brand?

I have 4 gig in my 2008 Mac pro currently. (All apple ram) So I want to get 4 more 1 gig sticks. Will third party ram conflict with my apple brand ram?

Thanks.

I plan on using the money I save by buying third party ram to buy an ATI 4870 and a 1TB hard drive.

1. Of course.
2. Price. It's hundreds of dollars cheaper! Oh, downsides?
3. OWC.
4. Anything from OWC.

You really don't want more 1GB sticks, man. 2GB sticks are stupidly cheap now.

On #3 and #4 is doesn't matter at all. Shop for spec vs. price and consider everyone. The "shopping" centers at google, yahoo, and others are great for this. First you compile the specs you need then search for the products that meet your criteria. Pick the lowest price for that item and order. Couldn't be any easier.

My '08 Mac Pro orginally came with 2GB of ram from Apple
Added 2GB more from OWC (4 x 1GB total)
Works like a champ.
