ok, another update. i took the ram into the apple store but they wouldn't install it because it wasn't "apple" ram... so i asked them for a 00 screwdriver and i'd do it myself.

10 minutes later and i booted up and ran a geekbench score. the new 1600MHz ram is recognised and utilised by my system!

i recommend the kingston 8GB 1600MHz ram to anyone with a 2.2/2.3GHz macbook pro
 
I'm wondering, you guys are speaking related to the 2011 version of the MBP, as the OP clearly asks, mind if I hop on here to ask regarding the 2010 15" MBP (i5)? I'm guessing these work, ya?

They may work in the 2010 MBP but you won't get the 1600MHz speed because that's a feature of the Sandy Bridge architecture in the 2011 MBP.

Ah, thanks for the insight. What's the cap on the first generation core i chips? 1067MHz?
