Hi,

I have a MacPro 3,1 with 10 GB RAM installed. It was working fine util I moved the machine from the floor into a worktop. Since then it only shows 2 GB.

i have installed 2 x 4 GB in left bank and 2 x 1 GB in the right, it is only showing the 1 GB modules.

It boots ok but run very slowly!

I have tried in Native El Capitan and OC/Monterey both show only 2 GB.

How should I go about trouble shooting this issue? I'm wondering if the RAM is actually dead or if MacOS is not detecting it for some reason?

All the Best
Dave

I pulled out the the two RAM boards one at a time, gave them a clean, out them back in and rebooted into El Cap. I had my 10 GB back!

I then shut down and put the Monterey disk back in and rebooted, when it eventually started up, I was back to 2 GB. I I then booted into El Cap and still only 2 GB!

How can I troubleshoot this?

I'd been running with the side off for a day so maybe it is getting too hot? I installed "Stats" and played around with it, maybe that's causing the fans not to work?

Cheers
Dave

When looking at About this Mac/Memory window, does the left hand bank relate to the top or bottom RAM Board?

I ran the diagnostics and it passed ok. It looks like re-seating the boards did the trick. Looking at the top memory board, it's sagging a bit. Is there supposed to be a front cover for the memory boards?

Do you have a photo...?

Looks like it needs a good clean....:p
Didn't realise it was a 3.1.
I didn't realise it was set up differently to 4.1/5.1 ram.

This has reared its head again, this time the two 1 x GB modules are not showing. I have stats installed and noticed that that one set of memory is running around 35C and the other 73C.

I have 2 x 4 GB and 2 x 1 GB installed.

Would the 8 GB run that much hotter?
