ok I've heard that some 3rd party RAM can screw up your computer..... I have a G5 with a gig of ram, I just bought another gig (PNY.....2 x 512 chips)

I havent put it in yet but some people told me I should have bought apple ram because it will be better all around for my G5 and that most of the time 3rd party ram sucks and causes more trouble than its worth..... so should I return the PNY ram and get some apple ram?

I do alot of audio/video production and the last thing I want is some faulty ram slowing things down.... thanks

I have 2gb of extra RAM installed, all non-apple. Things work great, I've never had an issue. Apple charges buttloads for their ram, and you can get the same product for much cheaper. Crucial is a suggested brand, and i've heard some so-so comments about PNY.

Lets see what everyone else has to say...

Whoever told you that is wrong. During the manufacturing process there is bound to be a few bad chips, and Apple is no exception with their supplier. The vast majority will simply work, provided it meets the specifications required by Apple.

so basically PNY is ok but not the best..... should I return it for some crucial ram?

anyone have any experience spcifically with PNY ram? any horror/success stories?

I got some Mushkin memory from Newegg for my PowerMac and it works great. And much cheaper than buying directly from Apple. Don't buy cheap ram, but don't overpay for Apple's either. There are plenty of good RAM brands out there, like Mushkin, Corsair, Crucial and Kingston to name a few.

I have had some bad experiences with PNY in the uni's macs. Personally i bought 2 512mb sticks of RAM from a reputable RAM company, trying to save a few dollars over Crucial. The first two sticks the reputable RAM company sent me were bad, as were the two they sent as replacements. I got my refund and bought 2 sticks from Crucial, and have had zero problems from them.

That said, where ever you decide to buy the PNY RAM from, make sure they have a decent return policy!

I have heard good things about Data Memory Systems but have not dealt with them. I highly recommend Crucial.

First thing, or course, Apple RAM is third party RAM -- just sold by Apple.

The difference between buying PNY brand or any other PC Generic RAM from BestNewTigerEggCompBuyCity.com; vs. RAM from a Mac-knowledgeable vendor, is that the PNY is neither tested not guaranteed compatible with your Mac. It may work, it may not, and it may work until the next OS upgrade, then stop. It all depends if it has been manufactured and programmed to the correct settings for your PowerMac. It's down to luck and your tolerance for testing it yourself and possibly returning.

A good Mac vendor will test and ensure that the RAM's Serial Presence Detect settings are correct, will provide a guarantee of compatibility, a lifetime warranty and a no-cost return if it doesn't work.

In the USA, I second the vote for Data Memory Systems .

Thanks
