On my mid 2010 mbp, is Crucial the recommended brand? I want to expand from the original 4GB.

No. Brand doesn't really matter. All brands should work.

From personal experience, check Amazon for Apple branded RAM. Had issues with both OWC and Crucial.

I have always bought crucial and had no issues.
I would say its probably as importnt to buy from a reputable seller so if its dodgy you can return it.
