This might sound like a dumb question to many of you, but I really don't know.

Is it possible to buy RAM in 1.5GB sticks?

Nope, if it's for your Macbook then having 2GB + 1GB sticks is probably your best bet, the extra RAM makes up for not having matching pairs. Of course, 2 x 1GB is good too. 🙂
