Hi everyone,

I tried upgrading my 2020 IMac ram to two Crucial 16gb sticks which and I’m placing them in the same slots as the ram that came with the computer (slot 2 and slot 4) but my iMac won’t start up.

I made sure the ram was pressed firmly and closed right but same problem.

I then tried keeping the original ram in there and adding my 2 sticks in slots 1 and 3 but it would not start.

I then placed the original ram back by itself and it started no problem.

What can I be doing wrong?

Be aware that when changing RAM on the 2020 iMac, the machine will initially have a completely black screen for up to 30 seconds, and no sign that it is on except for a very faint sound from the fans, while it is doing internal checks. Make sure you wait long enough. Otherwise what happens is people try to turn it on again, which actually results in turning it off, and then there is confusion about whether it is on or off.

If you are sure you have waited long enough, then possibly one stick is bad. Try putting in only ONE stick. If that does not work, try the other stick. (The machine will work with only one stick, albeit inefficiently).

btw, I have the same Crucial RAM in my 2020 iMac and it works fine, no issues

Yup, that was exactly it.
Everything booted up fine after about 30 seconds like you said.

One thing to mention, when I had my original ram back in I noticed my computer was turning off after some time where the mouse and keyboard would not wake it up and I had to press the power button.

Is this normal? I just got it to start with the new ram so I don’t know if it will do it just yet but I was concerned about it.

Appreciate the help!

Does not sound normal.

Good luck with the new RAM.
Check it is running at 2667 MHz, with equal RAM in Channels A and B
