RAM Usage

Hi, first post on macrumors, so sorry if I steal this thread.

Is it better to get 3x2GB + the 2x1GB standard memory than 6x1 + the 2x1GB standard memory, perfomance wise? (It's actually the same amount of cash)

The page outs are quite high there. You will most certainly benefit from more physical RAM.

I'm not sure what you'll do with 3x2 GB, but the idea is that the latency of the first 2 slots on each memory riser card is lower than on the other two slots. Hence, fill up the first two slots on each card first. While more memory in those back slots is better than none, I've got the route of slowly optimizing my first two slots on each card (up to 6 GB - 2 x 2 GB and then 2 x 1 GB). There is a point where the amount of memory gets to the point that the bandwidth limitation makes performance suffer anyway when addressing large amounts of RAM ....

So, what you're saying basically is that 6 gig (2x2 +2x1) will be faster than 8x1 if you only going to use 6? By the way, this will be my first mac since, ehm, 95(?). I'm hoping the switch be as painless as possible.

Not only will it be painless, it will be a relief never to have to deal with windows, spyware, viruses, blue screen, etc. anymore. The only thing that might hurt a little is your wallet if you have to buy a lot of new software. Maybe not even that. Rumor is you can get some companies to give you Mac versions of software for free if you sign something saying you'll destroy the windows copies.

Volante, where did/are you coming up with 3X2? OWC doesn't even generally sell it in other than pairs? Do it right,,, get 4X2,,, fill up both front slots on each riser with them. You're only talking one extra 2g module to do it properly. Sell the stock 1g's back to OWC if it makes it financially easier. Or sell the stock to me. (pm me)

Does anybody know whether Leopard has some feature comparable to Vista´s superfetch, essentially loading frequently used appz into a RAM cache?

I'm buying from a swedish company called Macoteket, they sell them separately. Every 2 gigs cost 386 dollars, including swedish taxes.
