I'm having the same issues and I think the problem is PowerNap.
I'm not keeping a diary of the reboots but I think that the reboot happens when I put my MBPro retina on charge before going to sleep.
Since the lid is closed, the mac SHOULD be sleeping too, and not crashing, unless something is happening in its sleep... here it is, PowerNap, which on most Mac is active just when charging (look on System Preferences/Energy Saving/)!

When on PowerNap my sleeping Mac actually updates calendars, email, etc which is nice, but most of all "tries" to update the TimeMachine backup. What if finding a non TimeMachine drive, or not finding any disk at all (which is more likely) makes him angry?

I've just disabled Powernap, both on battery and when charging, and wait for it to happen again.

Any update to this? Did disabling powernap resolve your sleep/wake failures? I have a Gen 1 Retina MacBook pro (Mid 2012) and I've been getting constant sleep/wake failures for the last few months.

I am having this problem on a late 2013 rMBP 15-inch and it just started 10 days ago. For me, there are no external drives in play - no drives connected to USB or Thunderbolt.

I wiped the machine and reinstalled everything (didn't restore from backup) and after 5 days of bliss, it happened last night.

It only seems to happen when it's asleep for a long period of time (like overnight).

Any ideas? Did all the resets you normally do. Thank you for any help.

Same issue

I purchased a Mac Mini server a couple months ago. Rock solid, no problems.

Then I decided I needed to set up Time Machine. I have a 1TB USB 3 external drive I wanted to use for this purpose, so I connected it and set TM up.

Randomly I'd get kernel panics, random reboots and *every single morning* I'd wake my Mac only to discover that it had rebooted some time during the night. Whenever this happened, the external drive would no longer be visible to the system, and the TM backup had suddenly become corrupted.

Not a clue what was happening, but I did research and through trial and error, I discovered that the external was the culprit.

I disconnected the external drive and bingo - no more panics, no more random reboots - no more problems at all. And it is indeed something to do with Time Machine AND an external drive, because everything else connected via USB gives me no issue whatsoever.

Hopefully Apple can fix this issue.

Sleep Wake Failure

Less than two weeks ago I purchased a new iMac 14 with Yosemite (10.10.1) and Time Capsule AC. I am returning the Time Capsule because of a series of problems resulting in I could never get it to set up correctly...but I suspect it has more to do with Yosemite than TC. But now that I have reverted to my old external hard drive I am seeing the same issues with Sleep/Wake Failure. Every morning I have a message saying my iMac has had a problem and has automatically restarted due to a sleep/wake failure problem. I was going to call Apple tonight about it but it sounds like they don't know how to fix it either.

I'll try disconnecting the external hard drive to see if the problem goes away. But if it does... then what do I do for Time Machine back up?
