Ok trying to understand something about smart playlists. I created two to load up my new nano. Once chooses 40 songs at random from two specific artists. The other choses 500 songs at random from my entire library. Both of these worked and are very handy.

The $#@$@# frustrating thing is they NEVER CHANGE. Is this "as designed" behavior for smart playlists that pick up a subset of songs at "random?" The way I would expect it to work is that at some trigger (ipod sync maybe, or clicking on the playlist) it would refresh itself and pull another random batch of songs. Both are configured for "live updating."

It's frustrating to tell it to pick x songs at random and it only does it the first time. I could do that myself without a "smart" playlist.

Any tips or thoughts on how to do it right?

Correct me if I'm wrong- but I think the smartlist will update when you plug in your iPod to sync it...I dunno. If you wanted to make a playlist of 50 songs from two artists, why not just make a normal playlist and hit use shuffle. It's not much different. Just one playlist is theoretically is smarter....I made smart playlists for like 30+ plays, 20+ plays, and more varying factors.
