Turned my Apple TV on. Message came up saying my 'new Mac' qualifies me for a free year of Apple TV+ (I haven't bought a new Mac). Clicked on button. Now have a free year. I was already paying the monthly subscription. The only thing I can think of is that my daughter, who is in our family sharing group, just updated her year old MacBook Air to Catalina.
