I once randomly found a broken iPhone in the street. Turned out to be a knockoff.
I think the Two-Tone back is the easiest identifier if you ask me. But yes, it is easy to tell the difference when you actually have it in your hand.
Ha I thought the same thing when reading the OP.Lol lie much? I mean really, was there a need for that long explanation as to why your trying to get past the lock screen?
Obviously this is a stolen phone.
I know, I know, your friends dog found it. And you wanna return it to the rightful owner. Yup. Sure.
Why report it to the police, they could care less. Give it to one of our finest and it will end up being used by one of them. Thousands of phones are lost every day and the police can not be bothered. If anything give it back to Verizon
Thats a shame![]()
I agree about not giving it to the police. I say as long as you don't get a call or anyone coming around looking for it, keep it and in a month if no one has come around then it's yours to do with what you want, sell/use/etc....

...So, point of this thread- the iphone is "passcode locked" and we're trying to figure out how we can somehow break into it to get like a friend's number to get it back to the owner. Any suggestions?
Ok... I will actually help you without all of the moral high ground grief...
It sounds like you have a 4 or 4S.
You say it's Verizon and there is no SIM. Are you saying there is a SIM slot with no SIM inside or are you saying there is no SIM slot period?
If there is a SIM slot, it is a 4S. IF there is no SIM slot, it is a 4.
Now... to get past the passcode. There is no way to break in and see the personal info. But if you want to wipe out the password to use the phone or resell it, then just restore the phone in DFU mode.
--------------------
To put the iPhone into DFU mode so you can do an iTunes firmware restore follow these steps:
Step One
Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac.
Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
Step Three
After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
The iPhone screen will remain black.
-----------------------
Even if you restore it back to factory settings, Verizon has almost certainly blacklisted the phone from use on their network. The only way it can be used now is to "flash it" to Cricket or Metro PCS. Or just use it as a WiFi device (iPod) without cellular.
You forgot the most important difference is that the iphone 5 has the 4 inch screen and the 4s has the 3.5 inch screen. Dah..real easy to see![]()
This gave the OP all he was looking for. Bravo for helping the kid out.![]()
Really!! These threads should be banned. If people are going to steal iPhones at least they can do the research themselves to learn how to get past the pass code. For Christ sake, at least let them learn how to google something.![]()
Granted without measuring it or having an iPhone 4S to compare to he wouldn't know it was a 4" screen. I was trying to got for a hardware feature that could be identified easily since you can see where the front facing camera is located. The 4S and 5 have the camera in two different locations.

I dont see any problem in helping a user, for some people its hard to search stuff like these or when they find a website they hardly understand what to do.
Enjoy your new iphone op just to bad its not a 4s.
