I just bought my 32gb ipad mini w/ retina a little over a week ago from target. This seems to be happening more than once a day. It happens on random occasions when I hit the power button to put the ipad to sleep or when I close the Smart Cover. It won't wake up when I go back to power it. I have to hold the power button and home button for 15 seconds for it to reboot. It's starting to get annoying.

Has anyone else had this problem? I already paid $35 for front and back screen protectors so I really don't want to get this replaced, especially if they give me a refurbished one... Not sure what apple's policy is on 3rd party retailers like target too.

Which is more important, having an iPad that isn't defective, or hanging on to $35.00 screen protector?

Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem and had it resolved instead of getting it replaced. I shouldn't have to make that decision if I'm paying a premium to own a apple product.

Just because it is an Apple, that doesn't mean that all the products produced are free of defects, or never have any post production problems. They are no different than any other manufacturer in that regard.

Maybe it is possible to repair the unit without destroying your post $35.00 investment. Best thing to do, is take it in to the Genius Bar, in my opinion.

This is what I'll probably do, but I'm 99% sure they won't be able to replicate the problem in the Apple store. Maybe I'll try phone support and see if its a known cause or not.

Is it a frequent occurrence? It happened once to my old mini, prior to selling it.
And happened a month ago with my rMini.
For me it seemed like it wasn't aware that the smart cover opened, so it didn't wake itself up.

It was a one time thing so far...

If they can't replicate, they can run test for 48 hrs, as well as sending it out for more intensive testing, should Genius Bar not find anything.

Have you set up the iPad as new, to rule out some kind of file or OS corruption?

if the screen protector is what you are worrying about try asking the company that made the screen protector and explaining your situation, they might let you exchange them or something.
