Rant: My experience trying to get the iPhour (iPhone + four.. you know)

AT&FAIL should just give up and go with a new slogan "We don't give a **** about our customers"

Here's how the story goes.

6/28/10 @ 4:00PM
Called the nearest AT&FAIL store their website told me.
Me: Will you have the iPhone 4 tomorrow?
Rep: Yes, we are getting them. We open at 10am.
Me: Is there a reservation system or anything of that sort?
Rep: it's first come first serve.
Me: Are you expecting a line? Is there by any chance one forming right now?
Rep: No, we're not really expecting a big crowd. We should have enough.
Me: Thx

6/28/10 @ 6:00PM
I go to 7-11 to buy a pack and walk by a what is clearly an AT&FAIL store that did not show up on their website. I proceed to walk in and ask questions.
Me: Are you getting the iPhone 4 tomorrow?
Rep: Yes, we're getting them tomorrow.
Me: Great, can I reserve it?
Rep: No, it's first come first serve.
Me: OK, did a lot of people call in?
Rep: No, you're the first one to ask about it.
Me: I didn't see your store on AT&FAIL's website, what gives?
Rep: Realli? no wai...
Me: ...
Rep: ...
Me: ... OK, see you tomorrow.

I wake up and walk over to the store to see if anyone is there.
Nop.
I come back to watch Japan play Paraguay. Boring boring game (I'm a big football fan, the proper football, not the one you get to use your hands)
Half time, I walk over again.
No one there.
I'm back again to watch the second half. Boring beyond description.
Extra time. Repeat.
No one.

I walk over and there's a different rep getting ready for opening. I knock and she comes out.
Rep: we don't ope.....
Me: yea I know, are you getting the ne...
Rep: iPhone 4? Yea, we are but FedEx isn't here yet...
Me: OK, since no one is here, can I just leave my number? I'm only a block away.
Rep: uh..... we're only getting the black ones
Me: I know, I know, can you call me when the truck comes in?
Rep: uh...... we're only getting the 16 gig model.
Me: :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I come back home and dial the nearest store AT&FAIL quoted me.
They open at 10 but given that this one had people inside I was a bit hopeful someone would be there too.
Ring Ring... Hello?
Me: Hi, do you have a line in front of your store right now?
Rep: We're sold out.
Me: :confused: you guys haven't even opened.
Rep: Yea, there's a list that you can get yours reserved.
Me: :mad: WTF... you guys told me yesterday it was first come first serve.
Rep: Well, have you asked if there was a reservation system?
Me: YES, and I specifically remember you guys telling me it's first come first serve.
Rep: Oh, we had a list
Me: ...
Rep: ...
Me: ... FU

I call the second closest AT&FAIL store that the website told me.
ring ring... thanks for calling AT& blah blah blah...
Me: Do you have the iPhone 4 today?
Rep: Yes.
Me: Is there a line outside?
Rep: Yes.
Me: How many people can you estimate...
Rep: We don't know
Me: ... I'm sure you have a set of eyes. Can you look out your window?
Rep: We can't tell you how many people are in line.
Me: Well then how many units are you getting?
Rep: For security purposes, we cannot tell you that information
Me: OK, then based on the units you have and the number of people outside, do you think you're gonna run out?
Rep: I'm sorry, we're not allowed to tell you that information.
Me: .............. wow, how do you live with yourself knowing you don't do anything and still get paid?

The search for a new iPhone 4 continues further and further away from home.
Then after 12 or so calls I call a store in Santa Monica (15 miles away from my house in Los Feliz)

Me: Do you have the new iPhone in stock?
Rep: Yes we have em.
Me: Is there a line?
Rep: No, we have plenty
Me: How many is plenty? Do you think you're gonna run out today?
Rep: We got a lot. A lot, we don't really expect to run out anytime soon.

Once I get to the store I ask them what's their policy on selling the iPhone.
We don't know. We only do what our manager tells us to do.

AT&FAIL never seizes to amaze me how unorganized and how incompetent they are as a group.
 
Somebody forgot to read about not getting iPhones from a AT&T store. You really shouldn't get it anywhere except for Apple. FAIL THREAD. Oh. And the Japan game was exciting lots of scoring chances.

I tried pre-ordering from Apple. AT&FAIL kept crashing customer info fetch so I was left out for second shipment for July 8th arrival.

BTW, have you seen the Spain Portugal game? THAT's an exciting game with lots of scoring chances. Japan v Paraguay.... meh...
 
In Nashville I had two friends that bought two phones each yesterday at an AT&T store... One for each of them and one for their wives. But they also camped out for three of them. The 4th was a walk-in later in the day with his wife to upgrade.

At least here, AT&T had plenty yesterday.

Sorry to semi-topic jack this thread, but why not?

I picked one up from the closet AT&T store to me (50 miles) with no problems. Then again, I waited in line for 13 hours. Maybe you should have been more devoted to getting your iPhone!
 
I can honestly say, as a user for the first time who got their preorder messed up by Best Buy (they "lost" my preorder slip, I was 4th, they got 25 phones...no call, they skipped me, literally LOST my order), I waited in line in Providence RI for 14 hours. 14 hours.

Mall opened at 5 am, they began selling/activating phones at 7 am, and I got mine at 12:30 pm. There had to be at least 500 people in front of me, AT LEAST and I STILL got a phone. So yes, if you are REALLY desperate and want a phone on release day, your best bet is an Apple store. Just make sure you're there by 5 am and wait 2 hours and you're guaranteed a phone. I mean, they had to have at least 1,000 phones. They were STILL passing them out at 3:30 pm, nearly 3 hours after I got mine, and I was way down the line. Way way down.

I truly understimated how much stock Apple would have for their store. Had I known that, I would have showed up at 5 am instead of 12 midnight. I wasted so much time waiting for nothing.

Are you a new costumer to ATT or something because I've gone through this process and no problems.

I think there was a lot of build up in the Japan game, but losing in PKs, is an awful way to go. FIFA really needs to regroup for 2014, goal line technology, bringing back of Golden Goal extra time. But that's for another thread.
