I don't know what you mean by a smaller platter. Physical size is still 3.5". The platter density is 100Gb per platter on the hitachi. Unless the raptor has less than 1 platter, there is no way that it can have a smaller platter "size".

The Raptors use a physically smaller diameter platter. Although the chassis is 3.5", the platter is considerably smaller in diameter than a typical 3.5" drive.

SCSI drives are used in servers and are made in order to be. They often are better manufactured and even come with 5 year warranty instead of the standard 3. Not sure about the raptor.

The Raptor essentially IS a SCSI 10,000 RPM drive mechanism with IDE or SATA electronics bolted on.

Go to versiontracker.com and look for Carbon Copy Cloner. You can make bootable copies of one disk onto another.

don't get CCC ---- go with SUPER DUPER ------ much faster and just as stable

first, my point was to say that the raptor is 2 year old technology and that there are much better price/performance/size ratios out there. sure, seek times are <5, but apparently the 16 mg buffer does in fact make up much of that performance loss.

Don't forget that lower rpm drives also generate less heat and often have a longer life due to less wear and tear on the drive heads.

Also, I don't know what you do with your mac, but I use the heck out of mine. I started with a 1 gig HD in 1995 (huge at the time) and thought i would never fill it. Then I got a 13 gig. Then a 40. Then an 80. Then a 200. Now I have over 500 Gigs and I am going to need more here pretty soon in my desktop to store next semester's work. I'll admit, I do video and lots and lots of 1 gig + photoshop work, but I don't think I am that abonormal, maybe just faster at filling it.

Article is attached as requested.

thanks a ton for the article!!!!! I really appreciate it!

Tuartboy, or others -

1. is the drive available for purchase as yet? Every retailer, that lists it, is sold out

2. the drive comes with a utility tool that can adjust its settings ----- any idea if that utility tool will work with Mac OS X?

thank you all!

The tests on the fastest 7200 rpm drives is out on barefeats.com. The fastest drives are still the Raptor and Maxtor drives. The new Hitachi still doesn't compare.

It scored head-to-head with the raptor in multiple tests. Amazing that any of those drives do considering the 2800 rpm difference.

Hitachi or not, I don't care. I don't own one, I just merely saw a great review. The real truth is that the raptor is aging technology and the newer 7200 series can keep up and have 8 times the capacity with futureproof specifications and technology. The price/size/speed factors are heavily against the raptor. It's just barely better for twice the cost/meg.

thank you all for all the speed test links and reviews!

I was all set to buy a 7k500, but I can't find any available anywhere

then I was about to get a Raptor, and compromise some boot drive room

however - I'm heartened by the Maxline III results ---- being a FCP person, the Quicktime test is what mattered most to me, and nothing came close to the MaxLine on that

Maxtor - you got a sale!

Thank you all, and BareFeats!
