Since getting my Macbook pro, almost all files that are downloaded as .rar extensions show up as .exe extension. Anyone have any idea why, is there a virus out there or someone just screwing with people downloading from the usenet services? Know it sounds crazy but its a thought.

It is not a virus* and maybe those archives are self extracting archives meant primarily for Windows users. The Unarchiver however is fully capable of extracting .exe files if they are just self-extracting archives.

    * Currently there are zero viruses affecting Mac OS X in public circulation, but there are other kinds of malware existing, that can infect your Mac, but that can be avoided via employing the proper security steps without the help of any anti virus software.
