As a developer who's main application is already on version 3.0.3 it would be nice if the ratings and reviews from much older versions (anything over a year ago) were retired... very misleading when people talk about features that were missing in the 1.0 release which were later added in a 1.0.1 or even 2.0 version...

Cliff.

from my understanding the rating system clearly specifies which version of the app the person used when they wrote that review.

I understand the trouble for you, but most users are smart enough to check the version against the latest version when reading reviews. At least I know i always do

Also I think it sorts them from latest released to older versions by default?

Part of Apple Halloween fright fest?

Yes it sorts it by latest version. Only the clueless who never uses iOS would think any other way.

The ratings in the appstore clearly distinguish between 'current version' and 'all versions' - to see reviews of older versions you have to select 'all versions'.

This is actually a good way for consumers to see if some crap was put out and if the developer takes good care of this and fixes it (e.g. complains in older versions are not reiterated in newer versions) - or if he is just ignoring complains. Also many people update their bad review/rating once an update is out that fixes the issues (at least that is what I see from my experience)

Featured Videos Just Alphabetic

I noticed last night that the Featured Videos under a genre were just alphabetic.

This is payback for changing the beautiful iTunes icon and getting rid of the colors on the navigation bar. :D
They just need to bring back iTunes 9 and I bet the rating system will come back.

The star ratings on the Genius view on the iPad has been broken for a long time. Every Genius recommended app has 5 stars, but when you click to the main app info screen, you see the real rating.

I noticed when I was checking for reviews for my game....I restarted iTunes twice lol.... at least it's not on my side

Probably because the latest jailbreak allows jailbreakers to rate stolen apps when they delete them.

Strange that you would say that, since I have seen on nearly every app in the past a listing for 'most recent ratings' followed by 'ratings for all versions.'

I can see the ratings just fine on the iPad. I checked my apps as well as angry birds mentioned in the article. They either fixed it or it is only a problem with some of their servers.

RadarWeb not working, either

RadarWeb, Apple's web-based bug reporter, seems to be working improperly as well. Perhaps it's related.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A400 Safari/6531.22.7)

I bet it's 'cause Apple are updating the app store, with a new "section" for the Apple TV and updating the rating system that they currently use for movies (and YouTube): Good or Bad Apple?

I contacted Apple yesterday about the ratings issue. There seems to be more going on than reported. Reviews were being posted with actual user names instead of the nickname associated with accounts. iTunes support tried to make necessary changes but then the system apparently kept the original named posts but added a second with the nickname. The named posts are not associated with the accounts so the user cannot delete them. iTunes Support's email refers to the Ping program and how to use it (I think it is just a canned response until this blows over). The removal of ratings has something to do with them trying to fix whatever is going wrong. Once the ratings come back the "named ratings" are renamed with the nickname.

I wonder if this has something to do with Ping. When I activated Ping, it began using my real name on reviews rather than my nickname. To get it to change back to my nickname, I had to change my real name in the account settings. Weird, but that's how it worked.

There's another ongoing problem with how ratings are displayed on iOS devices. My company sells books in the iBookstore, and the starred ratings for our books show up just fine when viewed from an iPhone. However, when viewed from an iPad, the descriptions say "We have not received enough ratings to display an average for this book." Doesn't make any sense to us.

Its working fine in the NZ store

Must be a US only 'feature' :)

Tragic how if its happens in the US store, its global news :)

Lack of ratings will be replaced with 7 day refund policy?

I heard somewhere that you can uninstall an app on the Android and not be charged or given a refund. Perhaps ratings will disappear and instead users will be given the option to uninstall and not be charged.

Sure wish they would add a "Best Rated" to the list. I don't really care about "Best Seller" or "Top Grossing". It's quality, not quantity.

Access the App store. Go into the Categories. Pick the category you want. You'll see "Top Paid" and "Top Free."

Shot in the dark here, but it looks like apps that make it onto the top 10-20 on those lists are pretty good.

Same thing goes for "Top 25" paid and free. Apps that make it onto this list also seem to have the most stars (highest ratings.) The longer it stays at the top of these lists, the better it is over time. It's pretty simple.

As for best-sellers, they're probably best-sellers for a reason, dontcha think?

Just as useful is the Genius feature. I've found some gems with its help. My only niggle with it is that when you select an app via the Genius list and then go back to the list, it doesn't return you to where you left off.

Because they are all inaccurate anyway?

Since, to this day, people don't understand - or rather, don't read - the what the stars mean and rate one star as the best, the value of many reviews is less than nil. It actually hurts developers of good apps, because their stupid, stupid customers can't figure out a simple everyday concept:

★☆☆☆☆ : i luv dis app!!1!

Apple needs to introduce an idiot test (or drunk test) into the review/rating process.

iTunes Issues

I'm on iTunes from time to time. I'm seeing unusual font for everything that is in iTunes. The other thing that I see different is that when I look at a particular album and the artist, the top 5 is totally different at various times. The newer songs that were in the top 5 are no longer in the top five. They also do not show the popularity of a song on a particular album.

Love Ratings and Reviews

While it's true that many apps get a bad review for something silly or minor, reading the bulk of the reviews -- good, bad, helpful, critical, etc. can give one a pretty good picture of the pros and cons. Reviews have encouraged me to buy many apps I might not have otherwise, and also warned me against others I had intended to buy. Overall, not a perfect system, but much better than nothing.
