With trim on, the performance dromsfrom 40.9 ->38.8 which is negligable.

10x performance is very compelling to buy the x25.

Don't forget to check the benchmarks very carefully to see how they make a drive "used." Some people never get to that point.

I agree. But in this case I think the poster is talking about raw performance of the samsung drive vs an intel drive, which is undisputed.

Sadly as discussed in other threads, we don't have much recourse at the moment.

I personally think that by the time the drive really starts to slow down, OSX will probably support trim. As for regaining performance in the mean time, the best way is probably to clone your data off the drive onto another disk, then perform a low level ATA secure erase command. (which requires a PC) and clone the stuff back on.

Agreed. Right now, the larger argument seems to be between Intel and Sandforce controller. There's a large gap after that.

Hmm, I am not feeling any noticable "slow-down" after 6 months of use. I reinstalled the OS about 5 times (and no "zero outs", not that it would help me because it's just filling the drive), I also write about 20 Gb of data per day on average (download, raring, unraring and so on). Still takes me 16 seconds to start the computer from cold, and I can't really see any slowdown, the benchmark have dropped a bit, but not a lot, although Xbench never worked on this computer, as it gives strange results.

The harm is that there is a difference between an empty cell and a cell with "0" written to it. "0" is just like "1." It's the same as filling your entire hard drive with data.

You're right, I misread and thought we were talking about secure erase of the drive, not secure erase of Mac OS X.

The sandforce drives do seem amazing. Except for the cost. I wonder if it's due to the 1500 controller vs the 1200 controller that they supposedly aim at consumers. In anycase I think there will be a price/spec war later. We know intel really gets good when they have competition. Also with any gen 1 product, I wonder if we won't find out there's some teething issues until after launch like the intel gen 1 drives/indilinx drives. I bought an intel 80gb drive last month, but I think I'll upgrade in sept/oct again when this all settles down. I'm going to bet we see am 320gb intel at that time with faster speeds due to a new controller, along with cheaper sandforce drives.

here's how I'm going to rationalize it...

I'm planning to buy the new 13" MBP with a 128GB apple SSD. I already have a WD blue 500GB that I will use with one of the cheaper optibay options...

This setup costs me with student discount $315 + laptop vs. the $450 +laptop for intel, granted slower...

I have no use for the extra drive I would get...

Also since I'm a student right now I plan to finance my purchase with the 0% deal, and since I don't have $450 to buy the drive I'm willing to get the apple one. I graduate in the spring with and engineering degree and will start work full time.

I figure I'll use this drive for a year or 2 and when the new intel drives come out and down in price a bit and hopefully osx supports trim I'll have plenty of money to spend on a larger SSD and be able to see massive speed gains.

My rational is that I want to finance the entire purchase and since I'm getting apple care I want to be able to take it in to the store for wahtever reason the first few years and get it fixed, I dont want to deal with mailing anything anywhere.

Once I have more expendible income I'll buy a newer drive and put the old one on ebay.
