Hi!
I'm a wedding photographer, and i've gone to edit my photos this morning to find that it says that the file is locked.
I can view the file using preview but it will not open in LR.
The only thing i can think of, is that I transferred some files onto a SD card from a windows PC, and on adding these into my existing file on the mac, has locked them all.
I was able to view them and edit them yesterday until I did this.
Also, on clicking cmd I, the 'locked' button is NOT ticked.
Please do help!
Dan

Hi,

in the infos window (Cmd + i), check what is in the bottom : "sharing and permissions".

Unlock, then select your user name (add it if not already present), click the gear icon, "Make me the owner".

It means that you already are the owner.

Do you have both read and write permissions ?

I would do a test : copy the file to a USB drive, rename it, copy it back to the Mac and see if you can open it.

Also if the "locked" thing is a folder, not a single file, try Cmd + i on that folder, unlock, select your user name, "Make me the owner" (if clickable), then "apply to enclosed items".

Ok, I have done this and still it is not working. I am able to delete files and open them in preview, but I am not able to open them in Lightroom or photoshop. Dan

A few thoughts, may help or may be of no help...

If you can open the files in Preview, have you tried this:
- Open file
- Select all content (command-A, I think)
- Copy to clipboard (command-C)
- Go to File menu and choose "New from clipboard"
- New file will open with copied content
- Export the NEW file to disk (Preview's "Export" command).

I'm aware that may only be "save-able" in jpeg (or one of Preview's other formats), but in a difficult situation, "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"...

Addendum:
You may not even have to do the "copy" routine, just open what you can, and export from there...

I have just become aware that EVERY CR2 raw file on my laptop has been locked, In every file and also on my external hard drive!

So this is just an issue in Lightroom and Photoshop? If that's the case then perhaps it's not the files, since it seems to affect all of them. But you can get a permission summary by dragging in a file into Terminal after you type:

Code:
stat -x /path/to/file

This is not an issue with Lightroom or Photoshop. It is an issue with the mac. All cr2 raw files are locked.

How do you differentiate between the two, you said previously that you could delete files and open them in preview.

This is true, but i cannot edit anything.
I have put these files onto a friends mac and they are also locked on his. I have no idea what is going on, thats all i have done is transferred CR2 files from a PC to a mac and now all CR2 files on that mac are locked.

Did you try what I suggested in post #6 above?

That is, open a file using Preview (you said you could do that), and export it OUT OF Preview "as a new file"?

Granted, this is not the optimum solution, but it may give you a way to access and manipulate the photos....

I can do this, but I cannot export to a RAW file format which i need for editing. Also, any file that I am putting onto my mac from my camera is also locked.

PC to Mac .cr2 files locked

I had the same thing happen and just discovered it today. My .cr2 files would open in the Preview App on my iMac but then quickly "blacken out" 90% and indicate the file was locked. I did the fix as recommended in this thread and made sure that 1) I as Admin had Read Write privileges and 2) that Everyone had read privileges
I had to do this on the entire Folder of Hawaii photos before it would work for a single raw image inside that folder. Hope your problem gets fixed too (easily) and is about permissions like others have written. I wish I could have done something up front in the transfer of these images from my old PC to my Mac to have prevented it. I think many of these folders were "restored via Crashplan" or transferred over our LAN. PITA if I have to go through and fix tons of folders. Thanks to those who posted this fix, though!

This is still not working for me. :( I have deleted Photoshop and lightroom, updated my OS, verified and repaired all the drives. I don't know what else to do.

Have you checked or reloaded the raw file converter for your particular camera? Without this plug in you can do nothing to raw files except view them in some programs.

Are all the files in the same folder?

Have you right-clicked a file in question and verified the file has not got the 'Locked' tickbox ticked?

Can you open terminal, navigate to the folder, and type ls -l and paste the output in here?

Did you ever figure out how to fix this? I have the same issue right now.

i seem to be able to open the file on preview- then up top, i see locked, i open the drop down menu and ask it to make a copy and save the copy

But a copy can't be saved as raw. Anyone find solutions?
It's normal that applications don't allow a raw format copy to be saved. That's the whole point of raw format: that it's directly from the camera.

Yes obviously but that was more in response to the comment above suggesting that as a fix. That’s not a fix for this problem. Raw files shouldn’t be locked & not allow editing either & according to above remarks I’m not the only one having this issue.

Hi Jamie - just had the same issue. If you are using a mac, right click on the image select 'get info' within here there should be a box called 'locked' that's the ticket. Untick this and you should be good to go.
