I'm going on vacation next week and don't want to take a computer with me but I will be taking my iPad3. Is there an app (free or paid) that will read Nikon RAWs and allow me to do some basic processing and then convert to jpeg?

PhotoRaw does that (although the iPad will import RAW most of the iPad photo editing apps just work on the jpg). Generally the iPad will work with any RAW format the Mac does, but check.

I would not attempt to use an iPad to edit raw files. At least, not iPhoto:

I don't think it's much different for any app either.

Here is what I do: I import pics into the iPad via iPhoto. I have tried other programs but I iPhoto to rotate, crop, email, cull, etc. in jpeg. Later I download the pics again into Apreture on a Mac via SD card, etc. The pics that are ultimately in my permanent library do not pass through an IOS device nor PhotoStream. The iPad is a great device that to see, review and share pics but to use Aperture and Photoshop you still need a MBP, MP or iMac. IMHO.
