It loads and goes to menu bar on every start up. What is it and do I need it?

Check System Preferences > Accounts > select user > Login Items
On Lion: System Preferences > Users & Groups > select user > Login Items

Check /Library/LaunchAgents/ and ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
(to reach these folders which are hidden in Lion, open Finder and click Go > Go to Folder > then enter the path)
