What do you mean smart cards?

Smart Card is a plastic card burned with data used for authentication. This is common in some business-oriented Windows laptop, which user inserts their own smart card, Windows will allow user to use computer. If smart card is removed, Windows will lock the system. Linux also provides smart card support.

Thanks, I knew what a smart card was in terms of credit cards, but I didn't know it was being used for validation/authentication.

The Government, especially the military does. Their ID card (common access card), is used for logging into government computers and websites.
