For those of you that updated your carrier settings to have MMS enabled, you may have noticed Group MMS no longer works the way it used to. Now it just groups all your outbound messages together and any that are received go into their own respective Contact messages. To fix what is effectively a downgrade, perform the following actions.

MAC USERS - Requires Developer Tools (or at least the PList Editor)

    1. Close iTunes
If you have performed carrier updates before, skip to 3

    2. Open a Terminal and type: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

    3. Goto ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support and make a duplicate (backup) copy of ATT_US.ipcc

    4. Select the original file and rename it to add .zip to the end.

    5. Extract and navigate the new folder Payload to carrier.plist

    6. Open carrier.plist and find the key grouping called MMS and expand it

    7. Check the box next to GroupModeEnabled and click save

    8. Right click on Payload and click Archive/Compress (depending on your OSX version)

    9. Rename Payload.zip to ATT_US.ipcc (make sure that the .zip extension isn't just hidden by Cmd+i or right clicking on the file and selecting Get Info... then Name & Extension. If it is there make sure you rename it to remove the .zip. Click Use .ipcc if it prompts you.)

    10. Open iTunes and Opt+Click on Check for Update, then select your newly created carrier file.

    11. Restart your iPhone and you should now have GroupMMS

WINDOWS USERS - Requires a way to edit plist files. Included instructions are using a plist->xml converter.

    1. Close iTunes
If you have performed carrier updates before, skip to 3

    2. Open a command prompt and use the following command: C:\Program Files\iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    3. Goto C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Carrier Support and make a duplicate (backup) copy of ATT_US.ipcc

    4. Select the original file and rename it to add .zip to the end.

    5. Extract and navigate the new folder Payload to carrier.plist

    6. User your favorite plist -> xml converter to open carrier.plist

    7. Mark GroupModeEnabled as True and click save (Someone please clarify this step)

    8. Convert back to a plist file

    9. Zip the folder and Rename to ATT_US.ipcc

    10. Open iTunes and Ctrl+Click on Check for Update, then select your newly created carrier file.

    11. Restart your iPhone and you should now have GroupMMS
    ---------------------------------------------------------

Some of you may wonder why I did not simply include the carrier file. Well, unlike previous MMS hacks, the current carrier settings provide a unique key for your iPhone to send MMS and removes the need for wap.cingular.com to use a username/password. Because each of these keys are unique to the phone it is not possible to simply upload my settings and then add them to your device.

EDIT: Corrected some wording for clarification in regard to why I cannot just provide my copy for download.

EDIT 2: Added approximation of the Windows process. Someone please clarify as my Windows-fu is quite rusty.

For Windows, step 10 should be a Shift-click.
