People always say re-install...well, i did and no change at all....no apple mail prefs shown....I think this is inherent in the OS High Sierra...any one with a fix.?

you mean, there's no preferences menu, under 'mail' in the menubar? you see "about mail" there, in the dropdown menu? what's under it?

is your software up-to-date? (just wondering). and did you reinstall from recovery? or?

try creating a test admin account on your mac, open mail there, see if it's ok (or not); will at least tell you if the problem's with your account... or global.

anyone else heard of this? or have ideas?

I did as you suggested and mail was fine in my test account....so ...now what? I have already re-installed it.

I suggest you bring your Mac to the nearest Apple Store's Genius Bar for diagnosis and repair.

Likely something in your mail configuration files is damaged and it seems improbable that anyone here will be able to provide enough guidance to repair the issue.

Sometimes it takes a skilled technician to poke around, maybe make a backup of your data before attempting any changes. We don't have access to your machine.

Best of luck.

Definitely a corrupt preferences file then. Since it moved forward, and your test account works, I can only assume you reloaded the OS without wiping your drive or you restored, bringing the problem with you on your reload. If that's the case, then do the following:

1. Quit the Mail App.

2. Go to (user) > Library > Preferences and delete this file: com.apple.mail.plist

3. Empty the trash, relaunch the Mail App

This will remove your accounts, so you will have to re-add them. Mail should open, preferences should now work as well.

def try what jdogg836 suggests first, before you run off to the genius bar; it's an issue in your account, not a larger one (or, for that matter, a high sierra-specific one).
