A bit of a spin off...

Does anyone know if you can print the notes you take w/ MS Word "Notebook?" Can you print the notes from omnioutliner?

Yes, you can print with both programs... But notes taken with MSnotebook would come out rather ugly, don't you think? Again, I recommend you to take a look to LaTeX (I posted a link to a manual in this same thread).

In Word 2004 Notebook view is there a way to print the notebook gridlines?

Thanks, but I shelled out the $$$ for MS office 2004; I intend on getting my money's worth! ;)

Why not take notes on paper and then, every night, summarize your notes on your computer? This will do two things for you - first, it forces you to go over the material again (something folks have shown helps for long term retention). Secondly, it gives you a chance to integrate your own notes with whatever resources the professor has made available online.

I had a grad student tell me once that the best way to study was to copy over all your notes after each class. And then, at the end of the week, summarize the week's worth of notes. At the end of two weeks, summarize the two weeks worth of notes, etc. By the time of the first test, you've gone over the material so many times already that you can reduce your study time. Plus, you have prepared a great summary with which you can study from (and if you are allowed to take in a sheet with notes on it, you've already created it). I've seen this sort of system work for many people (me, friends, other folks on my dorm floor). Clearly the advice was given before everyone in college had a notebook computer at their fingertips, but it would seem that it could be just as useful now. Especially if you don't copy and paste to create your summary, but actually type in the information anew.

Just something to think about.

I had friends that did this and it works really well...i never did it, i was happy w/ b's and wasted my time on drinking and partying...i would recommend this if you have the discipline and desire to do it...

I will be attend law school at KU this fall. They recommend a laptop. I sat in a class and 90% of the student were taking notes on a laptop...I will be doing the same.

I'm an Omni Outliner fan. Word notebook takes up too much screen space with that notebook eye candy. Omni Outliner is extremely compact and the keyboard shortcuts to promote/demote are quick and handy.

I'm so impressed with it that I may upgrade to the new version.
