1. iMac/ Macbook combo.
(This could actually be useful as I carry around a laptop alot and when I need power, I can resort to the iMac)

2. High End iMac
(I have a 15in HP dv6000 when I need to be mobile)

3. 15in Macbook Pro with 23in ACD.
I would choose choice #1 because that's what I did and happy with it. Then choice #3 for 2nd choice if the 1st one doesn't work out. The reason choice #2 doesn't work that well for me is because you might never know when you need a Mac on the road. :)
I hope I helped.

Well, today my dad gave me $1600 out of my total amount so far, not sure if that's as much as he wants me to spend.

Oh, and Chandler, I haven't ordered the 17" yet, I was just really excited and knew that's what my choice was so I went ahead and changed my sig :D
It's nice to meet someone here I can relate to. And In my opinion I'd go for choice #1 as well.

If my dad only wants me to spend the $1600, what do you guys think would be the best purchase for that amount, an iMac or a BlackBook?

Ah, I see what you mean. I'm way to excited for my new Mac purchase('s).

If you only have that much to spend, I would go for this.

Alot more powerful then a blackbook, will last longer, and it looks cool on your desk. :p
Not to mention that the screen is almost double of the MacBook. :)

You can upgrade the RAM to 4gb for about 80 bucks, and then get Apple Care eventually.

That really does tempt me haha.
But I'd much rather have a laptop.

I think I'll shop around online and see if I can find a good MBP, I would be fine with the 15". Since the MBP's have backlit keyboard and multi-touch trackpads, those would be much more equipped for me.

Where are all these kids getting this money?

Anway, I love my MBP, I saw this refurb. If you can front a little more, try this one.

I love the portability. It's my desktop at home and workhorse at school. Great machine.

I'm 15 too and have been working all summer. I think I'm gonna get the baseline 15" with my dad's Edu discount. It's just as powerful as the iMac but has the portability, too. If you get an External monitor too, MBP+Monitor seems to be pretty much equal to an iMac but you get the option to take it with you!

I found a brand new 2.5GHz 15" MBP on eBay that I'm bidding on. Does that model have the multi-touch? The auction didn't say.

I'd like to buy one through live.com to get around 25%...and I saw if I buy one through eBay I get 20% if I'm "eligible". How can I tell if I'm eligible?

I might buy the ACD later, when I get the rest of my money, although those are bit expensive for just a display.

They really are expensive! I think you're paying a lot for the apple name with those. You can really get 24inchers for the price of the 20in ACD.

No, the current live cashback is 20% and you are eligible as long as its a buy it now auction that uses eBay's checkout instead of a 3rd party like Auctiva. The 25% and the 20% are the same promotion.

It's not too early to plan financially!

Put half your money in a savings account or TIPs or a college plan and buy a refurb MB. If you watch really carefully a refurb MBP 2.1 G will show up for $1299.00.
It is hard to earn money and even harder to save it.

Good Luck,

OZ

Get yourself a refurbed macbook pro. Refurbed are just as good as brand new - Apple tests them.

Yep, and get Applecare with it. My last 2 macs have been refurbs - best deal in town. If you don't need the portability though, get a 24" imac w/ the 512MB graphics card. The 24" of screen real estate is pure sex.

Okay, so do the buy it now prices show the discounted price before or after you "commit to buy"? Also is there a way to tell if it's going to use the eBay checkout? I really do hate those 3rd party ones.

If I can't find one there, and if I'm not patient enough to wait for the other $700-$850 from my dad, I'll just buy a refurb 2.2GHz 15" from Apple. Those do have the LED screen, right?

Just me, if you knew you were getting the other $750 or so, I'd wait to get a 2.4 15" MBP (I may be slightly biased because I love mine), I could have bought a MacBook about a month and a half ago and I'm glad I waited to get what I REALLY wanted. I ove that I can take it just about anywhere I go.

I'm really wanting to wait, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to. It's my first Mac [computer] so I'll like whatever I get. I hope I'm able to wait a bit for the rest of the money, then I can really get what I've been wanting.

Like a 17" MBP :D

Good things come to those who wait

Damn, you're 15 and have two grand to spend on a computer? Shoot. Honestly, buy the Macbook and sock the rest away for college. You're gonna be poor for a while.

I've already got enough put away for college. So this money is going to pay for a laptop to last me through the hardest years of high school, so I need something that can seriously help me with homework.

If I drive to the Apple Store, unless they sell refurbs there [?], I'll buy a stock Blackbook. I'd really like the backlit keyboard of the MBP though, I always find myself working in the dark.

The backlit key board is really nice, but you'll find that the screen's brightness does the job. ;)

I'll be getting a Black MacBook next Wednesday or Thursday, maybe a bit later. Of course, if my dad supplies the rest of my fund before then, I'll get a 15.4" MBP.

Is there a reason why he won't give you all of your money?

Ha, that reason is why I have my own bank account/debit/ATM card.
Of course, my mom has access to it...

But I'm the only one who access's it.

No idea. I have my own debit card and gold American Express credit but they have to give me approval before I use them.
