how much memory will i actually get if i get 8gb ipod touch?

i saw somewhere that actual memory on 16gb touch is 14.5gb!!

(just like computer hard drive...i have 60gb but actual capacity is 55.6gb)

My 8gb first gen touch with the 2.0 upgrade was like 7.02 gigs after a fresh restore.

The memory available to the user will always be less than the advertised size.

One reason is the OS takes up space.

another reason is the whole bits and bytes difference. companies always advertise bits i think, but the computers use bytes so there is a difference. i think i switched it around but you get the point.

False. They'd be advertizing eight times as much if this were the case. I don't know if that's why he's in Time-Out or not, but it's important to note that he's wrong.

OP, it has to do with the fact that HDD manufacturers consider 1TB to be 1,000GB (10^3 of whatever previous) while operating systems consider it to be the real size of 1,024GB (the binary size of 2^10). That's why a 1TB HDD is only around 936GB; the OS sees it as 936GB, each one being 1,024MB instead of 1,000MB.

Hi there,

The iPod touch/iPhone OS is about 240MB at the moment (has been as high as 245MB but it's been refined for 2.1) So your 8GB will be less 240MB.....but you have to take into account the amount of space 'lost' when you fomat any drive.
I have an 8GB touch and it's capacity is 7.1GB once it's formatted and the OS is on it.
I have 678 songs, a 2 hr movie and numerous music videos on it together with lots of apps and still have 2.3GB left so don't worry!
Hope this helps.
