Is it possible to get Real Player or similar for the iPhone?
You failed to mention what it is you need it to do...
The built in iPod software does a decent job of playing music and video which is 1 function of Real Player.
If your looking for streaming audio/video playing within the safari browser thats another issue.

Real playe plays a lot of formats that quicktime doesnt.

Even if Real did make a player for the iPhone, there's no way I would trust them to come anywhere near any hardware I owned.

If there's a site out there that's still requiring Real, that's pretty disturbing.

I was wanting it to stream audio, mainly from BBC5

just go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts on your iphone

they have an iphone compatible version of their site

The BBC are going to introduce iPhone compatible live streams later on this year (and iPlayer radio streams). Don't bother with any apps, it's coming.

That said, it would be nice if someone could create a Real Player app for the app store. Wouldn't integrate with Safari but the Real Helix project *should* make it possible.

people actually use real player still?

lol.

That's what I was thinking. I thought that thing got killed years ago when people got sick of downloading a new version every 2 days. I'm almost as sick of Web sites using Windows Media Player for their video. Since Microsoft hasn't updated that for Mac in about 3 years, you're alienating about 10 percent of the viewership.

If you're putting video on a Web site, either do it with QuickTime or Flash.
