I think the emoticon/avatar thing would be great. Imagine being able to chat with someone in anime form...
If you have a Boot Camp partition set up, you might wanna check out FaceRig—it does the same face-puppeting thing as seen in the demo video in the article, has (IMO) more expressive models than the orc, and presents itself to the system as a webcam so you can route it into a Skype video chat, etc. One of the characters is an anime-style girl, and there are plenty of others besides. Only catch is that it's Windows-only so far, though they plan to gradually bring it to other platforms (starting with iOS, if I'm not mistaken). I backed it when it was on Kickstarter, and although I almost never go to the trouble of rebooting into Windows, it's usually to play around with FaceRig when I do.
