After reading this yesterday night, I downloaded the latest firmware ( 010G ) and installed it this morning without any issues. Has been working fine since... I doubt anything will popup in following days, but if it does, I'll let people know.

I updated my drive a day or two after the firmware update was released. I haven't had any issues either.

Should I just wait it out for the prices to go down further to $300 for the Vertex 4?

Thanks all!

What model MacBook are you installing this in? Does it even have SATA III?

Given the choice between the 512GB Samsung 830 and the Crucial M4, I'd buy the Samsung. I'll even pay a bit of a premium for the Samsung. BUT I ended up buying the M4 because it was so much less expensive and my laptop doesn't support SATA III, so the speed wouldn't have made much of a difference anyways.

I'd go with the 830. Why?

#1 - Benchmarks don't really matter. All SSD's are -fast-
#2 - OCZ makes garbage
#3 - Crucial has reliability issues
#4 - Apple goes with Samsung ;)

Crucial is actually quite reliable...
At the I bought mine, it was more stable than the most of the stuff that other's had... it might not have a huge write speed on paper ( although random writes are more than decent ), but it has not failed me so far. It does exactly what it is expected to do.

@OP: No matter whichever you will eventually pick, there will always be a "failure factor"...
In real world use, you will most likely not notice a huge difference ( if any ) between the devices.

They would be a nice drive but they have had many issues:

5,2000 hr bug: http://hothardware.com/News/Crucial...-SSD-Bug-Promises-Firmware-Fix-in-MidJanuary/

The last update makes your drive disappear: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-S...are-010G-is-now-available/td-p/107936/page/16

And this is anecdotal but a lot of guys have been reporting their 512GB's dying recently on various forums.

Have 128gb M4 and it's the best investment. I was debating a 830 or M4 (not V4 cause of Sandforce issues) but ended up with M4 cause it's cheaper. I think anyone would be very happy with any SSD.

Edited: V4 doesn't use Sandforce. I stayed away from OCZ because it had a lot more issue during the sandforce era. Don't want to gamble and hope they've improved with the V4.

The OCZ vertex 4 does not use Sandforce.

I've had 010G on my drive since a day or two after it was released and haven't had any issues. Must be dependent on the hardware setup.

I have a late 2011 sandy bridge so yeah Sata 3 is supported

If the difference between the 512GB Samsung and Crucial is $50 or less, I'd go with the Samsung.

What he said. No and the Vertex 4 DOES NOT use Sandforce, is uses Indilinx.

Right... as if all the other brands were mega-perfect?
Be serious... if you want a real comparison, compare the crap from other's too.
... and as you have nicely said, "but they have had many issues"... you wrote it, not me.

Nothing is perfect, OCZ had their share of crap too... samsung as well, etc.
Grow up... stop nitpicking... it's a decent drive, just like the others.
I got mine purely because it was more stable than the others at the time of purchase...

... sure OCZ had much faster drives then too, but tons of people were complaining the SSD dying after 1-2 weeks of use ( or a month max ). Samsung had controller issues as well ( so did Crucial and all the others... Corsair, Kingston, etc. )... whichever the OP picks, it will be ok... in real world scenarios, 90% of users will not notice the difference ( assuming a "decent" SSD is purchased and a some crap that is called "SSD" and is 1/5 of the price of known brands ). What's important is reliability and nowadays, all SSD brands are quite reliable.

You're looking for the "perfect" SSD? Good luck with that!
