'Real World' Photoshop Benchmark - Speed Test

53 seconds.

V10.0 CS3

2.4ghz SR Macbook Pro with 256mb 8600GT and 2GB DDR2 667 RAM, OS X 10.5.1

Didn't restart but had nothing else running.


Also, 23GB out of 160 free on main drive, no scratch.
 
I thought I'd give this test another go on my current Mac, which I upgraded the RAM for last week.

It's a Core 2 Duo MacBook – 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 120GB Hard drive (upgraded myself) – and clocked in at a respectable 1 minute 12 seconds.

It's interesting to compare with my previous main Mac, which I tested in May of last year...

My little MacBook took well under half the time the great big Power Mac did, I must admit to being was a little surprised by the difference in the respective times.

My iMac G5 2 ghz (with obviously 1 CPU) did the test in 2:03, so something is wrong with your PowerMac

You're in Russia though, the discrepancy between our times is probably due to the time difference between Hull and Vladivostok. 😉

I'm no longer in possession of the Power Mac in any case...

Photoshop CS3 (using no scratch disk and w/ 9.6 GIGs of free space)

Frankly, I'm surprised it was as quick as that. Can't wait until tomorrow so I can go ahead and order my new Mac Pro!

You should be surprised! I have the same machine, but with 1GB of RAM running Tiger, and it took 10min 53sec. No scratch disk, either. I don't know how much free space I had at the time. I ran the test a couple months ago. Also, what speed is your hard drive?

I'm looking forward to getting to sub-30sec times with new MacPro. Mine will be here in a couple days!

I got the same result on my identical machine. But I have two questions. I ran the test three times and got three different results (38, 29 and 26 seconds). Why is that? And also, I've tried opening and processing a 900 MB CMYK file of mine on the above Mac Pro and my older G5 with two 2.0 processors. The G5 is faster on most operations. I don't understand how this can be the case on single tasks, but on multiple operations (this speed test) it is much faster (G5 scored 1:13 the first time then 1:04 twice). Thank you for any help. gm

The speed test is purely processor intensive. Maybe the operations you are doing with your 900MB file are RAM intensive... How much memory do you have on your G5 compared to the 2GB on your new MP?

Tribe3 good point. I have 4GB on the G5. I guess I have to buy more RAM for the new machine?

Absolutely stunned - but the 2.8 Mac Pro mentioned earlier in the thread is amazing.

Ive got a 3.2 on order with a nvidia 8800GT. It will be a while before it arrives (but thats a different thread!)

I cant wait to run the tests. May even post on you tube if it is worthwhile?

To find the speed of mine, I got the drive make/model in system profiler under Hardware/ATA and googled it. I have a Toshiba MK8025GAS.

Fresh Reboot
28.9 seconds first run
24.7 second run
24.0 third run

5 gigs RAM total, CS3 set to 100% = 3072 megs
Scratch disk 1 = RaptorX 150gog 10,000rpm
Scratch disk 2 = Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm partition
Video = nvidia7300

Settings were set to test specs.

Completed time: 36 seconds

QFT. Will see what you do when you get your upgrades.

...interesting note. My time has changed by about 0.8 seconds compared to the time I posted on the previous page. I basically added more RAM, but CS2 was seeing its max of 2.7GB even when I had 4GB RAM vs the 8GB I have now so I wonder what caused the slight performance improvement. The RAM I have now actually seems to show a 3% reduction in memory bandwidth vs my old.
 
2.8 quad core 2gb RAM

just received a new quad core mac pro yesterday, and ran the test using CS3 10.0 as per instructions:

30.1 secs

ran a second time:

26.4 secs

mac pro quad core 2.8ghz 2gbRAM WDcaviarSE 320gb(?) ATI HD2600

Upgraded from a G4 Quicksilver 800mhz machine. The speed difference is so great I feel like £1420.00 GBP is a bargain. First post here, having paid numerous visits whilst waiting for mac pro updates. Thanks to all for useful and informative opinions
 
26.9 seconds.

Mac Pro 2x3.2ghz, 2gb of Ram, Raptor boot drive but using the standard 320 Gb drive as a scratch disc, there is also a 750Gb drive for storage. I have got 2 ATI HD2600 graphics cards (dont ask why) but am selling both to get the Nvidia 8800 when it comes out.

Pleased with the score considering the machine has other applications running and time machine is backing up, more Ram and I am sure it would have been even quicker!
