I agree. This is a huge improvement. Everything has been updated. But people have to complain EVERY year for some reason. And then buy it

This doesn't even include the intangibles such as increased overall durability, new (better) headphone jack placement, and of course the difficulty of cramming each improvement into an overall smaller footprint.

It's just overall better in every possible way.... but not good enough.

Honestly, the only objective complaint I could think of is no NFC. Which, even though I don't see an immense need for now, I can see it being important in future-proofing for my device that I will have for the next 2 years

oh and you better add one more, because you're sitting on 29!

But it looks the same and people won't immediately know I have the new phone unless I stop them in the street and tell them.

Waaaaaaah

/sarcasm

I have owned most iPhones produced (skipped the 4S) and am very excited about this new upgrade. I really don't understand what all the complaining is about. Seems like a great new iPhone to me.

Don't worry. Those of us that aren't crying out in agony over the upgrades will have the last laugh on Monday and beyond when Apple announces the highest number of pre-orders in history. Happens every year.

I think it's because at first glance, all they see is a taller iPhone 4.

How can the items in bold be considered 'big' improvements? For example, how will the new dock connector benefit you in any way apart from the reversible thing?

Edit: For the people who disagree with me, I am actually going to buy an iPhone tomorrow morning. I think its an improvement no doubt, but as much as the 3gs>4 was? I don't think so!

I like it smaller haha....something about a smaller footprint. Also, that 40% faster shutter speed is crazy. It already is insanely fast.

I would also like to say this is a great post. Really puts things into prospective when you talk about improvements.

+1

I think it's because at first glance, all they see is a taller iPhone 4.

But the thing is the appearance really is a lot different. I never have much cared for my iPhone 4 or the 4S's looks but I really do like the looks of the iPhone 5. The only thing they really have in common is they are rectangular.

I think it's because at first glance, all they see is a taller iPhone 4.

And, frankly, even with all of those improvements it'll likely still feel like.... a taller iPhone 4.

The display improvements won't be noticeable to anyone who's not comparing side-by-side, the rear camera will produce virtually the same photos, most people don't even use the front camera. The touted 2x CPU/GPU improvement will likely feel a "little snappier", but I'm sure only a select handful of carefully chosen functions will actually perform twice as fast. The new dock connector will be a nuisance for the first year or two (bye bye expensive HDMI cable that you purchased, hello expensive adapters....that won't work with the HDMI cable). No one cares about the SIM card.

That often just the way it is with these types of improvements.

44% smaller sim card is a spec, not an improvement.

Took it out, yet there is still 30 improvements up there (29 if you don't count the smaller dock connector, but I do) for the haters to cry about ;)

Man those tears will taste so salty mmmm :p

I would like to see a list like this, but showing changes from the 4. That is what I am upgrading from. I am in the midst of putting together the justification presentation to the CFO and I would like to overwhelm her with data. :D

No way, the new iphone is better than the old iphone. I dont believe it, wow I was not expecting incremental upgrades to the specs. amazing

do you think the next iphone may get spec bumps also??? That would be incredible.

Well I read it and facepalmed..."reversible dock" listed as one of your BIG Hardware improvement? LOL

To some it may be. I plug my phone in before bed, in the dark. This update is welcome. Plus the speaker at the bottom is larger due to the extra space.

Think about design for a bit.

You try to cherry pick one out of 30 and you think that makes you smart?

I just read your reply and facepalmed :p

Exactly, some just want to argue about semantics.

Display Improvements
4" Screen I'm perfectly happy with 3.5"
In-cell touch What?
44% greater color saturation I'm happy with the current screen colour, as are most people.
Full sRGB support Not sure what this is?
Higher brightness Current brightness is fine.
Less glare Glare doesn't affect me and I doubt it affects others.

Performance Improvements
2x CPU iPhone 4 is fast enough
2x GPU Current graphics processor is good enough IMO
Better battery life I doubt it, let's see what happens in real life.

Enclosure Improvements
20% Lighter Who cares?
18% Thinner As above.
Increased durability How exactly?

Wireless Improvements
LTE Good improvement but not worth £529
DC-HSDPA Unsure what this is.
Dual band 802.11n As above.

Camera/Video Improvements
Sapphire Crystal (more durable) Don't understand this.
40% faster capture speed Current camera is fine.
Better low-light performance How much better?
Improved noise-reduction
720p HD Facetime camera Current camera is fine.
Improved video stabilization Hmmm.
Still photos while recording video Pointless feature.
A6 post processing of photos Won't change much.

Audio Improvements
Better Earphones Nothing to do with iPhone 5 itself.
Three microphones What does this improve?
5 magnet speakers Unsure what this improves?
2-way noice cancelling earpiece As above.
Wideband/HD Audio HD audio? How does that work?

Connectivity Improvements
80% smaller dock connector Nothing wrong with the current dock.
Reversible dock connector What does this improve?

*********************************************************

All the above really shows me is that a lot of the new features are very minimal and hardly improve anything of any real significance. The only feature I actually think is a good improvement is the LTE.

The iPhone 5 is obviously the "best iPhone ever". But is it really worth the money for a lot of people? Certainly not for me.

I'm sticking with my iPhone 4 and until something really game changing comes out I'll be very happy with what I've got.
