My suggestion to you is this. I wouldn't worry about how every single iPhone varies in temperature. It's depending how you're using your iPhone and what for that sometimes it will warm up considerably. But that doesn't make the iPhone necessarily defective or indicate something is wrong.

While the high temperature might be normal, it isn't good for the battery.

Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

I don't think that's the case here. Second, I would also suggest that you review the previous posts by the OP, which some considerations are not exactly indicative of anything but anecdotal situations that don't seem typical. Not to mention, if the iPhone gets exceedingly warm, A message will indicate the iPhone needs to "Cool down."

Fwiw this thread is making me feel pretty good. I'm not a modern iPhone owner, in fact never carry a phone, no longer need one professionaly, although still very active value my private life too much. I do however have a 1st gen iPhone1.1 (A1203) purchased a few years ago, like-new/boxed, think it probably still has the original OS1. Bought it very cheap, and regularly see it's value escalating. For myself that's far more rewarding than constant concern about operating anomalies and/or perceived out-dated fairly new hardware.
For those who have a modern smartphone - excellent, that's fine, but for the OP - please just enjoy them for what they are.

OP, this is completely and totally normal.

Why do you allow a little warmth to bother you so much?

It's not normal. Just last night, I compared it with 6s+ in the house, case off, by starting to record video with both for about 5-10 minutes and the 7+ definitely got much hotter. Are all 7+ like this? Not sure if I should try to get another 7+ or go for the 6s+.

I would not buy a 2 year old device at this point. I would attempt to trade the 7+ for another one first. If that doesn’t work, what about the 8 Plus?

I was thinking that too but I think 8 Plus is about $140 more expensive. I heard they did an about $120 discount on 8 on Black Friday, maybe that was my chance but too late now.
I thought 6s+ is plenty good enough even if it is 2 years old, isn't it?

The 6S plus is still a great phone. Yes, it's two years old, but it really depends on what features are specifically you looking for. But in terms of still being a solid iPhone and performing well, it does that with no problem.

Again.

It is completely normal. These phones are very powerful. Powerful phones generate heat. It's science. The 7 Plus gets hotter than the 6S Plus because it's more powerful.

If the heat bothers you that much, be prepared to stay on an old phone for the rest of your life because this phenomenon is here to stay.

My iPhone 7 Plus gets hot, but I get why so it doesn’t bother me. I did see a video comparing the iPhone 8 Plus to the 7 Plus and the 8 doesn’t get nearly as hot. The video claimed the major efficiencies gained with the A11 chip vs the A10. It’s kind of incredible reallly-the A11 is over twice as powerful in CPU performance vs the A9 in the 6S Plus which is still a fast phone for most tasks. It seems overkill but probably nice for future proofing. I’m leaning more and more towards the 8 Plus and keeping it for a couple years. The camera updates are nice as well looking at all the reviews and videos I’ve seen, and my wife and I do a lot of picture taking with 2 young daughters.

Hmm, maybe I should get the 8+ then... but then, it's so heavy.

The heavy comments regarding the 8+ is an exaggeration. Yes, it does have some heft to it, but it's not like we're talking about using something that is completely fatiguing. It is heavier over the 7+ due to the glass backing and internal wireless charging capabilities added.

The 7 series suck camera wise.
The 7 Plus has a great camera, and with proper lighting, can get some great shots. I shot the attached photo of my daughter with my 7 Plus with NO editing. Lighting and location were good so that helps.

That is a really good looking Pic and a stunning young lady.

However, my wife has the 7 plus aswell and myself a samsung galaxy s8, and when I take pics on her phone and zoom in a bit it becomes unwatchable. That painting effect.

Hope the 8 series and the X is better with no painting effect.

Thank you for the very kind words. Yeah my wife and I are in trouble with that one :) I agree with you that the 7 Plus frequently does fall apart when you zoom in. To me, the iPhone 7 Plus is a great point and shoot camera, and the 8 Plus is finally elevating the iPhone camera to where it can out shoot in some shots the Pixel and Samsung devices. The new slow sync flash is actually much cooler than I thought, and the 4K at 60FPS can record some really spectacular videos. Plus the A11 chip and GPU of the 8/8 Plus will keep the iPhone relevant for a long time. This is why I've decided to go ahead and upgrade to the 8 Plus. The iPhone X feels like it's still a beta product in some ways, but I'm sure the software will mature quickly.

iPhones have never had the best cameras in the smartphone world, particularly for video recording (mono audio recording in 2017 anyone?)
They've always been among the best though in both photo and particularly for video quality. Nobody else, unless the Note 8 has had its software update is offering 4k @ 60FPS for video recording and the results from the iPhone 8 Plus are spectacular.

Generally all the reviews I’ve seen over the years (certainly since they got serious about the camera with the 4s) have placed them in the average-good category, there’s almost always been something on offer that can do significantly better. Perhaps the latest round of phones is where they finally break out and start to lead the pack, certainly the 8 and X cameras are getting praise, but it most certainly hasn’t historically been the case.

I support this statement. Apple invests a lot into the cameras into the iPhone. Some expect dramatic improvements every single year with the iPhone camera, when in reality, it's making the small enhancements that make this iPhone camera better. The Dual camera was my favorite transition to the Plus model.

I got a new 7+ delivered yesterday. It's on 10.2.1. I think I'll keep it there for awhile. I installed the TVOS profile so that I will not be prompted to update my phone.

One of the reasons that I ordered the 256GB red 7+ is because I knew it would be on 10 firmware. I just wish I hadn't updated my three watches to 4.
