This is so true.

I firmly believe that a positive attitude can really affect one's situation.

njmac I wish you the best. Please see PM.

BTW, good news about the misdiagnosis. Glad to hear that you are doing okay.

Thanks for the PM. I also believe in a positive attitude because it has been proven to make a difference. Once the initial shock wore off, I was able to think more clearly. I'm glad I had an appointment so soon after the initial diagnosis.

Thanks again everyone :)

I have been having a cough for a month now, and went for a chest x-ray to see if it was pneumonia, and was SHOCKED when the doctor said I had emphysema  I am so upset, I am freaking out.

I am 34 (female), never smoked, and I stay home to raise my 2 perfect children ages 2 and 3.

I don't have any info yet, except that I have an appointment with a pulmonologist on Monday. :( :( :(

I hope in many ways your doctor is stupid and wrong, but if he isn't I hope for the very best for you. It sucks that smokers can run around and be fine but it's the ones who don't smoke seem to get sick.

Very true... there are some studies that suggest that in people broadly who develop cancers, having a positive outlook can have as much influence on survival likelihood as chemotherapy can (i.e. people who receive treatment and also have positive outlooks are much more likely to survive than those who get just treatment).

Thanks again everyone :)

I feel a little silly for over reacting before seeing the specialist for a second opinion. In hind sight it really isn't rational to think that a 34 year old non-smoker could come down with such a serious lung condition.
