Really Simple but Vexing Mail Question

I have Leopard and use Mac Mail. Ever since I got this computer in March 08, my Mail program shows that I have 2 new messages in the dock icon. The number goes up when new mail arrives. But I can never get it below that "2". Myself and a friend have tried everything. We have searched every folder and message for new messages that were inadvertently never opened. There is nothing that I can find that is unopened. Please help. The constant promise of 2 unread messages is starting to make me nuts.
