i took mine out of the box friday morning at 9am with 83% charge. I used it constantly until sunday at 10pm when it died. I didnt think it was ever going to die as I was trying to drain it!

I have to say I think it does run down a little bit faster than my iPad 2 but I'm going to check back today.

If you have a hard time seeing the screen at 80% brightness it must be defective. I run mine at 40% brightness indoors with all the windows open during the day and can see it just fine.

I used mine about 3 hours and went from 100 to 60% which projects out to 10 hours as advertised.

Have your unit replaced.

For me it was a combination of turning Bluetooth off and screen at about 65% and i get similar battery life as ipad 1 and 2.

Did you set up you new iPad as "A new iPad" or with an iCloud or computer backup/restore? With it connected to the computer with the cable or wirelessly?

I restored from an iCloud back-up wirelessly and had battery problems immediately. Then I read on this forum that I should restore the iPad to factory settings and set it up as a new iPad through iTunes, connected to the computer with the cable.

My battery drains within 3-4 hours at 60% brightness. I read in an Apple How-to article NOT to let it go to 0% before charging AND not to leave it charging all night--only to about 80%.

I really want to improve battery life and don't want to have to go to the Apple store.

that's crazy battery talk, where does it say that?
and so much for post-PC if ya gotta hook it up, again.!

Last night was the first time I got to spend any quality time with my ipad3. I got home around five, and played with it for two hours or so, went out to dinner, and then used it for two more hours. My battery was already at 10%. This is way worse then I ever got with my iPad 1, which I would charge once every 2 days.

I think that the culprit is the screen. I need to run it near full brightness to see it. Anything below 80-90% is illegible. Anyone else experiencing dim screen, and bad battery life?

I'm going to swing by the apple store tomm and compare my iPad to the display versions to see if I got a defective one.
My battery is nothing short of phenomenal. I've owned every iPad made and this one beats them by about 2 hours or so.

If you aren't using it, turn off Bluetooth. I notice my battery depletes faster with it on.

Bluetooth 4.0 drains battery? LOLLLLLLLLLL

but seriously, it's just a placebo affect you're going through. Bluetooth on all day would have negligible impact on battery life, particularly for BT 4.0 protocol. Very marginal, unless you're actively using BT. if you're not and BT is enabled all day, shouldn't be an issue in terms of battery life.

I was actually getting annoyed that it would take so long to deplete battery life lol. It's a big change from Android tablets, lemme tell ya.

iPad battery life is phenomenal. You won't find a screen at this resolution with 10 hours battery life. None. Zip. Nada, until the next iPad iteration comes out. I'll bet money on it.

Four hours of use down to 10% certainly isn't good. I've been running mine almost continuously surfing the web, streaming radio, and reading for the last 4.5 hours on max brightness, and my battery is down to 60%. You might try going through a charge cycle before you exchange just to see if it makes a difference.

This is a link to one of the articles I read. http://bit.ly/GAjeSm

I am going to drain it to 0% tonight and try that before reset again or go to the Apple store.

***I just discovered that Bluetooth has been on the whole time. Would that be a drain of this magnitude?

The battery life seems to be the same as what I was getting with the iPad 2. I have the brightness at the same level as before.

Man, battery life on this thing is amazing, I can do anything on this and it won't die. But do again i'm used to android products lol,

Are you wearing sunglasses? I haven't even turned the brightness past 60% yet because I don't want to burn my retinas out

Also haven't had battery issues, in fact it seems to be better than iPad 2 because it can go even lower brightness when used for reading at night, 100% brightness all the time will drain the battery on every electronic device, no matter what.

http://www.displaymate.com/iPad_ShootOut_1.htm

Display always on, 100% brightness, airplane mode, no apps running: 5.8 hours.
Display always on, 50% brightness, airplane mode, no apps running: 11.6 hours

new iPad screen draws 260% more power than iPad 2 at the same brightness level yet the battery is only 70% bigger.

So how did Apple not lose battery life? Two reasons:

1. Apple made the 50% brightness mark dimmer
2. They made iOS more power efficient

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57398665-37/new-ipads-battery-life-nearly-the-same-as-the-old-ipads/

Movie battery life

new iPad - 12.8 hours
iPad 2 (iOS 5.1) - 14.2 hours
iPad 2 (iOS 4.3) - 11.9 hours

So it's rather misleading to say iPad retains the same battery life as iPad 2 because iPad 2 received a major boost. At maximum brightness, running LTE, doing web browsing, you are looking at less than 4 hours.

It's going to take like a week or so depends on usage..battery needs at least a good 7/10 cycles to have a break inn..then you'll see better performance

Im actually pretty impressed with battery life given how beautiful the screen is extra graphics ram etc....and it lasts me all day and still has about 40-50% usually around bedtime. I'd say that's pretty damn good and I use the thing pretty heavily. I just charge overnight and I'm good.

Battery life is definitely better than I thought it would be. Pretty much on par with my first gen iPad. I'm happy.

I know what you mean, still on my first charge, but I was using it at full brightness with WiFi on, and you could watch it drop from 65% down to around 30% in 2 hours. But when I use it with minimal brightness, like usual, I get exceptional battery life. I am happy.

For me the battery life is astonishing, far better than my MBP.

I have brightness around 50% and i'm currently sitting at 43% battery charge. The last time I charged it was Friday night (it is now Tuesday night). I don't know how Apple did it, but well done.

FWIW I have been surfing the web and app store, I've also played the occasional game. I haven't been watching any movies though.

WiFi only, 32GB.

I dunno where I read it, but I remember sometime ago reading that Apple products (I'm not sure if this is exclusive to Apple) have some sort of mechanism that affects charging and battery. IIRC, it said that once the battery reached 100%, the device would run off the charger and neither use nor charge the battery.

I don't think I'm going to wake up at 5AM just to unplug my charger when it hits 80% Lol

I was seriously unimpressed with the battery life after the first charge but since running it right down to 0% and back up again it seems have done the trick. I think it must need properly calibrated before you start to get the advertised battery life.

I'm unimpressed with this thread so far. Maybe I should start a thread about it.

This, battery was 98% out of the box, ran it down all day Friday and Saturday till it turned itself off, recharged overnight, and am getting the advertised battery life. Also turning off bluetooth and making sure my brightness isn't way up probably helps.

My battery life is very poor I must admit. I am running the screen at 50% but at times I can literally see the % figure drop before my eyes (it went from 94,93,92% whilst typing this) when I observe it. My iPad 1 was nothing like this.

So far I've done one full drain and charge cycle on it. Already considering returning it due the screen.

Edit. Bluetooth is already off.
